The PSP

Does anyone feel...let down by their PSP? I remember when I first bought it, I was swimming in my new piece of technology, then I discovered homebrew and had tons of fun, I've all the Metal Gear games, played through them all...once, save MGA2 which I still pick up if I am bored enough.

I have other games like LocoRoco, Katamari and Viewtiful Joe, but I've played them enough to not pick them up for awhile.

Most of the games on the PSP just don't seem to hold interest as much as it's Nintendo counterpart.

Plus, I don't even use it for videos, pictures, music or internet, is the system really worth keeping and sinking more money into (games)?

Plus, just around the 2 year mark of the PSP, Sony confirms there is a PSP redesign. Though it doesn't say anything about inhancing graphics or anything, they'll just be making a smaller lighter version, much like the PStwo and DSlite.

So, what I'm asking is...are you people still using your PSP, and if so, what for?

Not got one yet, but I get the general feeling that the DS is better?

I still use my PSP, but that's almost exclusively for homebrew and the luxury of being able to surf the internet without even getting out of bed. There's very few exclusive games on the system that I'd call genuinely great.

I´m still using my PSP. For games though. However, i doubt that the PSP will survive next year (or even this year), because of the lack of entirely new games, instead of those crappy PS2 ports. Thank god God of War for the PSP isn´t a port of the PS2 version.

Still no new franchises though, eh? :???:

I hate handhelds in general...I pretty much despise both my DS and PSP. I prefer sitting in comfort and playing games on a big TV...without hurting my neck.

Well, I'm still waiting for Crush, but I think that's the only new IP of any interest coming out for the system. The only others I can think of that were all that good are LocoRoco and Exit.

There´s Lumines and Persuit Force, but both games are either released or getting a sequel which also have a PS2 version.

Yes, i'm still using it.

And not just when playing MPO or MGA.
I'll use it as MP3 player when i'm going to work. But i don't watch anymore videos with it, at least not so much.

I've used it a bit... a lot less than when I was into developing homebrew but I stil use it to watch movies when there's no power or to play PS 1 games on the go.

UG&G is also a fav of mine for the system.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE my PSP. But maybe that's because I expect nothing from it.

I am a VERY picky gamer. Not just with the PSP, but with all my gaming toys: PS2, PC, Gameboy, etc. I don't choose any old game. I hate sports games, I hate RPGs (for the most part), I hate RTS, I hate cute games (except Mr Driller and Bomberman) -- screw Mario, etc. The only things I do like are FPS games, and there are very few of those. I mentioned once that I would love to see a SNATCHER game for the PSP, and that's because I love to read. So I groove on those text games.

I think I own a total of 5 games for my PSP. That's it. And I never bother to finish them. I'm a very lesiurely player. I do it to space out and kill time. Pure enjoyment. So I never grow tired of my PSP. (Oh, and I own one or two movies. Gods, they are awful fun to watch on occasion.)

I also believe my enjoyment comes from the fact that I have a wider selection of games than the average player/user as I understand Japanese so I can purchase from both the US and Japanese markets.

For the record, my is a first gen Japanese (1000) PSP does not use homebrew at all. I have the latest Sony updates as soon as they come through. I constantly update my machine.

After all I have said though, I think my first paragraph says it all: I expect nothing from my PSP. By that I mean it's just a gaming machine, that's it. I never compare it to anything. I bought it because I wanted to play games that suited me. And it has done VERY WELL by me. So perhaps you should ask yourself... what are/were you expecting the PSP to do for you? =)

Kindest regards,
Made in DNA

i got uber excited over the psp--blew my xmas 2005 bonus on it. twice the price of my DS (which came with another code/trace memory), didn't even get a demo disc.

the console itself is clunky, the analog stick is awful, the disc-reading is horrendously loud. playing earthbound on the train to-and-from work was fun, until valkyrie profile updated my firmware, making me unable to play roms from that point onward.

to this date i don't have many games for it, and the ones i do have i don't particularly care for. i can't even offload them on ebay, nobody will bid.

legend of heroes 4: a tear of vermillion: not only suffers from a bad translation, but this re-imagining of the game has removed key aspects which made it a fun experience, namely the guild side-quests and mercenary characters. what we're left with is a slow, extremely-linear, piss-poor remake of a 1994 game, which feels more in tune with a 1990 release.

popolocrois 1 & 2: showing its age, but the load times are painful, as well as inexcusable, considering how old these games are.

valkyrie profile: once again, load times are awful, it takes 5-7 seconds just to open the status screen. lots of slowdown during battle, too. valkyrie profile isn't the most ideal game to play on a portable system in short bursts, either. i guess it's good that it's seeing a re-release, though...

tales of eternia: this actually runs better than the PS1 version. the mode-7 overworld map rotates much more fluently, and load times are nonexistent. kudos to namco, this is worth owning.

metal gear acid: i like this one a lot!

astonishia story: this is pretty faithful to the PC version. unfortunately, this is just a poor game, with awful writing, flat characters, and design/gameplay on par with any RPGMAKER2000 creation. sold my PC copy years ago, picked this one up for cheap, and quickly remembered why i parted with it.

i'm interested in trying out gurumin and portable ops, but...jesus christ.

and as for if i'm still using it: occasionally. i just started playing MGA again, and sometimes i'll stick episodes of curb your enthusiasm on it, and a backup supply of mp3s in case i get caught with dead batteries in my cd player.

i'll take my DS with Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk over this ridiculous debacle of a handheld system anyday.

on that note, just think if kojima ever made an adventure for the DS...oh my!

I mostly only use my PSP for classic game collections like Gradius Collection, Twinbee Portable, EA Replay, Capcom Classics Collection and others.

I just use it to test out GBA games that I'm interested in, now (and to go on the internet when I can't be bothered to get out of bed). I've been playing Rhythm Tengoku all this week.

Well, I finally got my first import (japanese) PSP game in the mail today:Twinbee Portable!

Image

XD I love it! It's mad fun! You get:

The original arcade version of the first Twinbee game
Detana Twinbee
Twinbee Yahhoo!
Pop'n Twinbee
and a remake of Twinbee da!!, which originally came out on the Game Boy in 1990 (Japan) and Europe in 1994 (as Pop'n Twinbee). The picture of Light and Pastel on the menu and title screens is so kawaii! XD As for bonus features, all that's really there is a jukebox mode, where you can listen to all 5 of the featured games' soundtracks, and you can also listen to the music from the Sharp X68000, or whatever it's called's version of "Detana Twinbee", and the first BGM for that one is a re-arranged version of the music it plays when you turn on the arcade machine for the original Twinbee (and that music also plays when you turn on the arcade machine of the original Gradius/Nemesis). This is pretty cool, but it would've been cool if there were more bonuses like a video gallery featuring stuff like the opening to Twinbee Paradise (they could've also put the theme song in the jukebox). But aside from that, I'm very satisfied! XD
