La Jetee (must read)

Post by Henry Spencer »

According to this article, a recent, excellent review of Snatcher; the game was not only based upon Blade Runner, but also La Jetee: http://www.armchairempire.com/classic_g ... atcher.htm

La Jetee:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056119/

According to the review, even the final image of the plane taking off into the sunset from Snatcher matches the final image of Le Jetee

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am definitely going to watch this movie now. Twelve Monkeys also is supposed to be a remake of it as well, and is supposedly inferior! Owch, sounds like a great movie, we'll see anyway.

Did anybody else know about this or even has seen the film already?

I've seen the film, but I didn't see as close a relationship. I must watch the dvd again (it is included in a series called "Short").

Of course I watched it since it wa sthe film in which 12 Monkeys was based.

Snatcher had a lot of different influences, other than Blade Runner (the most obvious being Terminator, considering the Snatchers' design). If you were going to watch every film that Kojima made direct references to in his games, you'd end up spending quite a lot of money. Sorry if that sounds cynical, dismissive or generally negative, but it's true.

I am a little interested in seeing a 'better version of Twelve Monkeys' though, as I really enjoyed that film.

Well, in that review, he said that Blade Runner is the biggest influence obviously, alongside La Jetee and a lot of the scenes matched up. I don't know.

No, I didn't know about it, but this analysis sometimes looks a bit far-fetched for my tastes.

I've already seen La Jetée once, and I must admit I'm one of the rare human beings in the world who didn't like it so much and prefers Twelve Monkeys. :???:

While Chris Marker's "film" exhibits that "nostalgic feeling" I usually love, it doesn't work on me this time. I don't know why. Maybe is it so because of still photographs... Or the fact that the story is basically the same that Terry Gilliam's "remake"...

You'll probably notice the big reference to Vertigo (another "classic" movie I didn't like) in it.

P.S. I hope I didn't sound too much like ratperson in my message.

I found out about La Jetee after I watched Twelve Monkeys, I have always meant to watch but it just fell of my radar. And having not played Snatcher...

Play Snatcher and watch La Jetee, best advice of the day.

I'm going to do the latter myself, anyway.

Same here (Terry Gilliam is one of my favorite directors), though despite the influences they really are very different films and so hard to compare.

I'd never drawn a connection between Snatcher and La Jetee before. The image of a plane flying off into the sunset, for example, is pretty common.

La Jetee doesn't really end with a plane taking off. The ending takes place at an air-port, for sure, but that's not the focus of the final scene. Same thing with Twelve Monkeys.
