Making My Own Website - Advice Please

So, I am making my own website, I'll tell what about if this ever comes to fruition. Basically, I am wanting to just know the basics, like which services I should use, which is the best for what etc. Just getting a general idea at the moment. Any help with it would be most useful, since I'm scouting various websites, looking at their structure, and asking for advice. Just thought I'd ask here, as well, since I noticed some of you may very well be webmasters, yourselves.
Thanks so much.

Free-Webhosts.com is a good comparison site for this sort of thing - let's you know who has what features and all that. The apparently best X10Hosting is good, but they seem to suspend your website ridiculously quickly if you don't immediately stick any content up, the wankers.
Also, I don't know if you're quite the stickler I am about this, but none of them really have vaguely decent addresses - they all seem to have 'web' or 'hosting' in the title, and it does your site no favours aesthetically. I'm still looking for a decent website with a decent URL, and I haven't quite found one yet, but then .coms seem to be getting increasingly cheap.

I can second that.
Geocities has never been particularly good.

Hey you! Not talked in ages! How are things man?
And thanks very much for the feedback, everyone, I'm very much new to the whole ideal, when it comes to making a website, especially one that is successful. I'll be sure to let you know what I end up doing (if any of you care that is).

My first advice would be to get a paid for service, so you get rid of ads and stuff. It is the first thing that would discourage me from visiting a site. It isn't expensive at all, and you'll get full control and services to do as you please and offer your visitors whatever you really want to do.

Yes. I'll prolong this website until I get my new job, then. Any recommendations of what services to use or what have you?
