Metal Gear 3 for the 3DO

According to the Japanese Wikipedia articles on Metal Gear Solid and the 3DO, Kojima originally planned to do his third Metal Gear game for the 3DO while working on Policenauts for the 3DO. I don't doubt the authenticity of this, since the same conceptual artwork of Snake, Meryl and FOXHOUND by Shinkawa also appeared on the Policenauts Pilot Disk, which was released in 1995. The article cites Hidechan radio, but it doesn't specify which episode. Googling "Metal Gear 3" doesn't help, since it simply leads to Snake Eater fansites.
Also, did the Snake's Revenge team worked with Kojima on the original Metal Gear for the MSX2? The subtitles in Metal Gear Saga Vol. 1 seems to imply this, but none of the staff members in Metal Gear 1 or 2 seems to match with those of Snake's Revenge.

It makes sense to me too.
What lines in Saga Vol. 1 are you referring to?

I was hoping you would know the source though.

In the Metal Gear 2 portion, Kojima says "They had worked with me on the original MSX2 Metal Gear. Like Metal Gear fans the old crew knew that Snake's Revenge wasn't a true sequel. They asked that I come back and make another Metal Gear with them."
But cross-referencing the staff members in Snake's Revenge and the MSX Metal Gear games doesn't turn up any matches for me.

It'll be Hidechan, but I've no idea which episode.

Isn't he saying that the staff on MG2 was the staff from MG1?

Oh well. I'll probably have to search it myself. Thanks anyway.

He precedes all of that by saying "one evening evening, the staff of Snake's Revenge and I found ourself on the same train heading home after work". I think its a translation error though and by staff, he only meant one person. Especially since I hearing he using the singular pronoun "kare" (him) rather than the plural "karera" (they). You might know, since you have a better ear than mine.

Its on the Private Collection disc too. I might take a screenshot as soon as I get around to downloading a new PS emulator.

Yeah, it is a translation error. I noticed it when I first saw it. It was one staff member he met on the train, not the whole team. He also mentions this in the Portrait of Hideo Kojima article in MGSnakeD, when he talks about that one guy, a programmer, I believe it was.
So with that in mind, I think it's the MG1 staff that went on to work on MG2, isn't it?

Methinks it'd be a little more useful if one knew a lick of Japanese...

Aye, it's very hard to navigate in parts. I knew there was Metal Gear artwork on there, but i didn't know there was that much of it.

hmm.. interesting indeed... i have never heard of this untill now.
This pretty much explains the long time between releases of Metal Gear 2 and MGS. (8 years... right?)

Yup.
This is quite an interesting thing. I'd never seen it before. And I'm still sad that the crazy Foxhound logo got retconned. I'm hoping that when Big Boss goes crazy the logo will too.

Yeah, too bad. They could have come up with a fairly simple explanation for using the cartoony fox (i.e. Sigint is the one who drew it, to Big Boss' dismay).

Can anyone take a guess who the people in the mgs concept art are?

We tried to figure this out at my forums some time ago. Some said that they recognize Decoy, Liquid and Wolf in this old artwork pic... but i don't know, most likely many characters or all of them in that pic has been changed/removed/replaced after the project was moved to PSX...

According to the liner notes of the Metal Gear 2 soundtrack, Kojima already had plans for Metal Gear 3 when Metal Gear 2 was released.

I'm sure that I've read that Kojima planned to make a 3D sequel to MG2:SS as soon as the technology caught up with his ideas. He had a lot of new ideas during the development of MG2, but some of them didn't match up to his vision, so he decided that he'd go back to them on a future console. A few of his ideas still aren't viable for current gaming technology, like his infamous idea to make a game that can emit smells.

This topic just made me think of something...
So what came first, Meryl, or MGS?

Meryl (Policenauts).

I think he was referring to the concept of MGS, not the actual game. But then again, we don't know how far this MG3 was planned out, and how close it would actually be to MGS.
