MGS: The Essential Collection available for pre-order

I saw two interesting news stories over at Kotaku. Apparently, Play-Asia and Gamestop are accepting pre-orders on Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. The pack includes Metal Gear Solid (PSX), Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. And the description over at Play-Asia says that Substance and Subsistence are Directors Cut versions (?).

Now, I'm one helluva big MGS fan, but buying three games that I already own is something that I just can't afford, when there are other, new games out there that I haven't bought yet. I'm WAY behind!

So I would only buy this collection (if it's even gonna be released here in Europe) if it had something that's new, and worth it to buy three games that I already own. That "Directors Cut" intrigues me, but I wonder what that could be. For all I know, it could be something awesome, like new cutscenes (though I doubt that), or something completly useless. And it might just be that they mean that Substance and Subsistence is just the "Directors Cut" of Sons Of Liberty and Snake Eater. You neve know... Has anyone here ever heard of a Directors cut?

Oh, by the way, sorry if this has been posted before. I looked for it, but I couldn't find a topic for it. But maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

I'd be willing to bet that "Director's Cut" means the regular Substance and Subsistence. If they've changed anything at all, they might have removed the online mode in Subsistence (if they include disc 2 at all). At a real push, Substance might include the deleted World Trade Centre references that Ryan Payton was trying to release, but I would expect a feature like that to be better publicised.

Substance and Subsistence I thought were the special editions of the games. I only have the first two, and my copy of the second isn't substance, so I guess I should pick this one up. This thread just made my day.

I don't believe Substance and Subsistence were ever officially referred to as the "Director's Cut" or "Special Edition" versions of Sons Of Liberty or Snake Eater, though. If Kojima Productions ever brought out something they called "Metal Gear Solid 2: Special Edition", it's safe to assume that it would be a different product from Substance. This isn't the case here, but no-one from Konami have publicly said anything about this, so it's not out of the question that it may be different from the original Substance/Subsistence.

I guess we just need to wait for it to come out. I believe early March was the release date. I always love it when they come out with these sorts of things for cheap. I bought the special edition 3-pack Devil May Cry, which included all the games for 30 bucks brand new. I wish they would do more collections for games over here, because sometimes a game is released with a bunch of sequels, but if you miss the boat, then you never really get the chance to catch up. The Japanese are lucky, because a lot of their games (particularly Konami's) eventually come out with a special edition. I donno if anybody here likes rpgs but Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix still hasn't come out in the states, but maybe someday....if they would only kill off all of the disney characters *sigh*. By the way, does subsistence include the original metal gear games (1 and 2)?

I always assumed the "director's cut" remark to be Play-Asia Engrish.

They were on the second disc of Subsistence, but I don't know if this pack includes the disc.

I hope they do. I've been waiting to play those games because I figured I could see if they'd come out with it on a special edition.

Official press release says that the MGS2 is the "Director's Cut". Maybe it does have something exclusive. Ryan Payton will probably confirm/deny it soon enough.
Konami Press Release wrote:EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - February 5, 2008 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today confirmed speculation that Metal Gear Solid ®: the Essential Collection is currently planned for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Now Metal Gear Solid fans have the final chance to fully immerse themselves in the Metal Gear Solid universe before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

"Since its inception, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been one of the most successful game series in the history of video games, receiving worldwide recognition and praise," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. "Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection represents a great value for gamers, bringing together three must-have classic titles which pioneered the stealth action genre."

Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation game console, the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa.

Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection is rated M for Mature by the ESRB and sells for a suggested retail price of $29.99. For more information visit the website at www.konami.com.

I still say it's just Substance and Subsistence, though they're obviously letting it remain ambiguous for the moment for hype (why not just say in the press release?)

If there was deleted stuff reinserted, Japan would have gotten it last year.

One thing i've been thinking is that maybe MGS1 has upgraded graphics in that version. Since it is saved on PS2 DVD-ROM is could be possible that the game resolution is remastered to 640x480 res. Also the FPS might be better than in original PSX version...

Interesting... isn't it?

I'd say it's more likely to be Substance and Snake Eater (or possibly a modified version of MGS3 with the European extras and the camera from Subsistence). But it's worth taking into consideration that Ryan Payton has been working hard to get the deleted scenes released, and if Konami have decided to release them, they'll probably attach them to a new version of MGS2. MGS2 is the only game that Konami are listing as a "Director's Cut", too.

Here is a pic from play-asia.com, but it seems they have removed it...
But i swear they had this pic on play-asia previously. :???:

Anyway, you can see that the MGS1 is packed on PS2 case.

That doesn't mean anything my friend. A word of advise? Expect nothing new/changed at all, the only differences will be cheaper packaging and maybe worse art on the discs, just as usual.

Besides, it's labelled "PlayStation", not "PlayStation 2". It wouldn't be labelled "PlayStation" unless it was playable on a "PlayStation".

Good point
My bad, i didn't notice that detail, it just looked like PS2 case so i tought it was...

Anyway, another thing i was thinking is that wouldn't it be cool if MGS2 camera has been updated same way like MGS3 subsistences 3D camera?

Day dreaming such stuff will only make you more vulnerable to disappointment when the repackaging of this quick cash hits.

Same here, but it is perfect as a quick money maker and as an introduction to the series for newcomers.

Meaning no Metal Gear 1 & 2. Sucks.
