I am a huge fan of the metal gear series. It just seems to me that metal gear games are just so much better than every other type of game out there, with it's action and amazing stories. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for games like metal gear that i would enjoy,

Thanks

Well first off you should try Kojima's other games, he puts the same effort into those stories as he does in the Metal Gear series :) . There are several games out there too, I just can't remember some of them!!

Definitely pick up Ico. It's the only game that I've played to compare to Kojima's in artistic storytelling, visual style, and brilliantly laid out gameplay. It's just a beautiful and amazing game. But you should also play Kojima's other games like Ninja said. Boktai or Policenauts. They're all fantastic.

Yes Boktai 1 & 2 have the almost exact gameplay characteristics as Metal Gear Solid. :D

Here are some games I enjoyed equally as much as the older MG games:

NES/Famicom:
Snake's Revenge
Die Hard (very good, though more action based)
Mission Impossible

MSX:
War of the Gods 2

... more as I think of them. Let me raid my collection and get back to you. :)

I guess it might help a little if you elaborated a little which aspects you liked. For an overall MGS-like experience, I'd suggest Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever (preferably PC versions). For the absolute pinnacle of stealth-based games try the Thief trilogy, especially the first two games.

Deus Ex, it's a hell of a game. If you can get past the simplistic graphics.

From a story/gameplay mix standpoint, I really enjoyed Beyond Good and Evil by Ubi-Soft (plus, you can get it for a VERY reasonable price). It's got some elements of everything, a decent story, some stealth type stuff and interesting characters.

Come to think of it, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (also by Ubi-Soft) was also really good at mixing story and gameplay. A very well-done game.

Sly Cooper (at least the first one, haven't played the new one yet) is another one that has a good story/gameplay mix. A very polished game with some great gameplay.

Thief really is the pinnacle of pure-stealth gameplay. But I also found it very hard (I'm not a PC game player usually) to control.

I've actually owned ICO twice, both times trying to really get into it, but I never could. It's strange. It is an incredible work of art, but I don't think it's for everyone.

None of these games are really "like" MGS, but I think they share some of the same overall "quality" of the MGS series. MGS3 is just such a well thought-out game that's executed so well, it's raised my standards of all games I play dramatically.

Good topic.

I've always been interested in finding more games similar to the early pre-MGS games.

Did you specifically want games similar to MGS on PS1, or the older 2D MG games?

Keep listing stuff peeps, I want to find more MG like games to play. :)

I went back to it, and found that the original MSX/Famicom MG game has something in common with Zelda games.
They both utilise special items and have a very cell based style of gameplay.
In both, each screen, or cell, is like a mini puzzle in itself. You need to find the correct route to move on to the next cell. Once you become adept at that specific cell, it becomes a doddle to get past.

Though I prefer the slower stealthy approach of MG and its present day setting as opposed to Zelda's constant hack and slash action style.

Which brings me back on War of the Gods 2 on the MSX. Though more action based, its quite a chilling game set in the present day, with a post apocalyptic setting. Enemies are scant, so its got a good chilling atmosphere.

Otherwise Ive yet to find anything that can match the stealth of the MG games from that era.

Anyone else a fan of Snakes Revenge?

It's kind of hard to believe that Ubi Soft has become such a top publisher. I don't remember any of their games on previous consoles and now they're coming out with fantastic games like the Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil. And let's not forget folks, January 11, Resident Evil 4. It looks amazing and according to EGM, who didn't review it yet but summarized their initial impressions, everyone has to experience the game (whether or not you already own a GameCube). And that comment was coming from Mark who can be a fairly tough critic (he only gave MGS3 a 9). I expect it to get triple 10's next issue (I just got February's issue yesterday in the mail).

any many people mentioned, Ico is a game every Metal Gear fan should try atleast once. It is bit hard to get into if you are not into puzzle filled games. But it's worth the effort just for the good feeling you get after beating a really hard enviromental puzzle.

Though comparing the both games, they are totally diffrent. But Ico has this feel of depth and great story that only Hideo Kojima has been able to create. I am a HUGE fan of Ico. I am actually planning on creating a fan site dedicated to this game.

Also Deus Ex is a great game if you want a substituation for MG series story.

Now about Beyond Good and Evil, i have yet to try it  What does it have that makes it such a great game?

Polish, among other things. It's just a very well thought out game. There's interesting gameplay techniques (the camera idea is very well done), a neat storyline (the VAs can get tiresome, but not to me) and a great world environment.

I might be an exception here.....

but I hated Ico. It played like a poor 3D clone of "Out of this world"/"Another World"

Except not as much fun.

I wished the woman could be killed allowing me to simply enjoy completing the environment puzzles without her annoying high maintanence, she held back the game, was totally boring and I didn't care for her.

The gameplay mechanic also reminded me too much of Mickey Mouse on the NES where you had to help Minnie around the levels, except she could'nt take damage and so was usefull sometimes. Yorda was dead weight, like having to babysit your kid brother/sister whilst you are wandering around a arcade/bar/city/tokyo (delete as applicable)

Also, there is no depth to the story, at all. Some people call it a love story, which I dont understand. I couldnt relate to it, because in that situation I would have tried to escape on my own. its basically: dude meets chick, they try to escape from castle, the end.....

And yes, I realise that I am dead inside.

I understand where you're coming from Otaku. As I metioned before, I actually bought Ico on two separate occasions (Used) thinking "this time, I'll be able to stick with it." While from a purely visual art perspective, I'm still quite impressed, the game itself didn't do it for me.

I believe it is an "ambient" game. I mean, you have to play it with no other sounds, light sources, etc. In a totally absorbing atmosphere (I play everything that way anyway).

I loved the game, by its envolving atmosphere, but I sincerely believe that it is not a game to be enjoyed by al the public. It is more personal, more of an "empty room" just as Tim Rogers describes it.

You fill it with something, if you have something to fit in there. It absorbs you by your own thought on it. rare thing to describe.

I guess I really am empty inside.

But as you say, the art direction really is amazing.
The UK version also got the nicer cover, which I really like.
It reminds me of Escher actually....

I guess it all depends what we want out of our games.

This is kind of a crappy suggestion, but I have heard that the people who enjoyed and were able to follow the story in MGS2 tend to be the same people who liked the Xenogears and Xenosaga games, although the gameplay is totally different (they're RPGs). The only similarity is that the stories get really complicated and if you lose track, you're sunk.

take this with a grain of salt, the similarities end there.
Also: Xenosaga's american release has crappy voice acting.

Since Hideo Kojima has admitted he took a big influence from the games, I'd suggest the Legend of Zelda series. Some of the characteristics of the first game can be seen in the first two MetalGear games (top-down view, achieving goals on an expanding map, etc.)

It's one of my favorite series', so it's probably my main recommendation.
