Finally we don't need to guess what "no place to hide" means for the future of the series
You've said that in Metal Gear Solid 4 there will be "no place to hide." Does this mean having more action over stealth next time around? Obviously you don't want to say too much, but can you tell us any more?
Hideo Kojima: That comment was probably a bit too misleading. Metal Gear has always been about stealth, that aspect definitely won't change. When we come up with a new Metal Gear game we always think about where we want to hide. With Snake Eater it was the jungle. If you want to hide in the jungle you need camouflage, that's why we added the camouflage to the game.
The reason we're saying "no place to hide" for the next Metal Gear is the game will be set in a place, we're not going to tell you where yet, but a setting where your response will be "Oh my god, how do you expect me to hide here?" When you do actually hide in that environment, it will be very thrilling and tense.

Interesting. Is Kojima too busy to work on MGS4, or is he just bored of it all?
EDIT: Well, if everybody else is spewing guesses, I'll go for a giant white empty room.

My guess is the ocean....im silly
Obviously the game is designed to work without the radar, but if I'd had the time I would have loved to have created a separate mode that has a radar for a slightly different playing experience. That's something that I'd have loved to have done if I had more time.
So thats what will be in the remix version then ehh?

It'd be interesting if the whole of MGS4 was set in an urban environment.

My guess would be the desert.

People, this is Kojima, it could be anything from a shopping mall to a gynecologist's waiting room. Or both.
My guess is.... it will be a train.

With any luck the game will be "Metal Gear Solid 4: Nano-Tactics" where you play one of Snake's Nanomachines in the Shadow Moses Incident, taking orders from Naomi and others. There'll be a picture-in-picture of the game being played in the corner, and you have to hit certain button combinations to make sure you release the FOX-DIE at the right time, stimulate his arm, release pain killers etc... The part where you have to stop Snake from using any weapons will be a button bashing thing, if you let the meter drop below a certain level Snake can use a gun and blow the whole place up. Game Over.

That's ridiculous.

You know, that was my guess as well... like a city or something.
Hey, maybe it takes place in washington DC post-MGS2?? probably not, but think of it...

Maybe its Beyond Coast space station? A few years after the incidents of MGS2.

It'll be the porno section at a rental store. We all wish we could get in and out of there unseen.
Hey, how come nobody's taking Kojima seriously when he said that maybe the next Metal Gear won't be released in the states? Obviously, it's unlikely, but it doesn't mean that down-the-line, if sales don't improve for the series, the games may not be released in the states any further.

I'd personally like to see MGS4 be based in a desert. There really aren't a ton of places to hide in one, unlike a jungle or a military base.

Metal Gear has already covered the basic premises behind most military bases and environmental terrains. It's not necessary to repeat them. I think we'll probably see a noir'ish atmosphere in the next game. I'm thinking like a Third Man kind of atmosphere maybe.

I thought the USA was always the biggest selling place for the series?

The USA generally has the bigger sales number but it's more popular in Japan in relation to the population. Go here for a more elaborate answer.

I allways thought that Metal Gear was like the Silent Hill series and that the bigger sales numbers were from Europe
