Question on the Japanese version of MGS2 SOL

Are there any differences in the game depending on which of the 5 choices you select at the start ?

They will decide the difficulty of the game, and whether or not you start with the Tanker Chapter or the Plant Chapter. I can't believe I'm explaining this 4 years after the event, but then I just realised they're not in the US version are they? They were in the European game.

Thanks. I finally got around to playing the Japanese version so I can record the cutscenes on a dvd. One more question, when selecting a choice that starts you in the Tanker, does it change the intro credits to the Plant scenario?

I actually have some foreign release questions myself too, but didn't want to make a new thread with this one already existing.
1) How many dubbed versions of MGS1 were made? I understand there were Spanish, Italian, French and German versions produced in addition to Japanese and English. Are these the only ones produced or were there others.
2) What's the deal with making Special Missions an expansion pack that requires the original game to play instead of a stand-alone like VR Missions in the US? Does the characters' voices changes accordingly to the version you're using or what?
3) For the European release of MG2 and MGS3? Did they have a single European version containing subtitles in every country's language or did they have individually-subtitled versions for each country? I imagine it would be latter, seeing how they had different packaging for each European country.

Johnny,
1) Those were all the dubbed versions that were made I believe. It does mention the decision to make those versions in Document's history of MGS2's development, but I don't have it to hand.
2) I didn't realise that the US VR Missions was a stand-alone, I have to say. I can't think of a reason for Special Missions being like that, I know the UK version of the game simply uses the US voices, I'll check up on the foreign ones, if someone doesn't answer the question here.
3) MGS2 had all the subtitles for all the languages on the one disc, whereas MGS3 (they must have really been pushed for space) had foreign language subtitles limited. The UK MGS3 I have has French and English, but I know that the Spanish version has just Spanish subtitles.

Special Missions only recognises the PAL version of MGS, as far as I'm aware. Then again, the only other region version of MGS I have is Integral.
I think the reason that Special Missions was released as an add-on pack, was basically because Konami wanted to play MGS first. They released a few different MGS/MGS:SM packs, here.

Are you sure? I think MGS2 too was split. At least, I know the Italian version here had only Italian subtitles, that's why I bought my SOL in the UK

MGS2 definitely had multiple languages, at least French because I played it through with them on, and I'm sure I had to flick through German and some others to get back to English. Shame on me, I don't have the game to hand to check, but I will at some point.

If you start in the Plant, you get the intro credits shown then. Same as the US version.

I have another question about MGS2. I know that the American and Japanese versions had the Virtual Boy-like red and redder vision while wearing the Thermal Goggles. Was it the same for the Euro version? Or does it use the more true-to-life infrared vision from Substance?
Also, were the FHM posters and magazine covers were included too? I understand they were replaced in Substance due to licensing issues.

The Euro MGS2 had the FHM posters (FHM originated in the UK) and also had the Virtual Boy style goggles. In Substance for the UK, the posters and goggles were changed in line with the Japanese and American versions.
There is one difference not mentioned here that you probably do know already, that is the ringtone on the cell phone that Mr. X gives you. The American and European versions have the same (rubbish) ringtone.

Rubbish? It's just the standard noise of phone ringing. What did you want, the William Tell Overture?

Heh, the Japanese version has the MGS theme as the ringtone.

Doesn't the original Japanese release of SOL have different difficulties e.g. US Easy=JP Normal?
Anyone know if the JP MGS3 is the same way?

Yes, the difficulty settings in the JPN MGS2 were labelled differently, with Easy being the lowest setting and Very Hard being the second hardest in Japan. Extreme (and E-Extreme) is the same for both versions.
The difficulty settings in the Japanese MGS3 were the same as the US version AFAIK.

When the Euro version asks you questions when you start a new game, does the voice actor for Rose speak the lines she does in the Japanese version? I played it years ago and can't remember for sure.

The last time I heard those lines spoken was on 8th March, 2002, when it came out and I played it for the first time. A woman certainly does speak them, and if it's Rose in the Japanese version I'd be willing to bet it's Rose in the European release. Again, I don't have the game at hand to check.

Having just listened to it, it definitely sounds like the same voice actor.

I don't think so on IMDB
http://imdb.com/title/tt0249008/fullcredits the one credited for the computer voice is Nancy Linari and I'm guessing it's that voice on the begining

Well if it's something they added in later (unless of course it's not - I don't know if that feature was in the original game) then it's possible that she's not credited for it at the end because they didn't have time to add it in.

Yes, and if she's doing it as Rose, she's already credited. As Rose. Not "voice at start that reads the questions" or something similar. If Rick thinks its Rose, and it's Rose's Japanese counterpart in the NTSC-J version, I'd say it's her. Just wish I had the game here to check myself.
The "computer voice" would be the woman who says "retinal scan recognised," outside the shell 2 core assembly hall.

Well, I don't think it's supposed to be Rose, just that it's the same voice actor. It wouldn't really make sense if she was in-character as Rose, would it? ("Metal Gear Solid will be referred to as the previous game," etc.)

Well, it would make perfect sense really, wouldn't it? The Plant Chapter being a "construct" and all, the whole thing of it being a VR Mission/test/simulation etc etc and her being one of the Patri0ts at the end. Maybe it was meant to be Rose the Patri0t, not Rose the "real" character.
