There's five different game modes in online play- 'Sneaking Missions', 'Capture Missions', 'Rescue Missions', 'Death Matches' and 'Team Death Matches'
Missions will be set in popular locations from Snake Eater, and some new locations such as Small Forest, the Kill House and the Abolition Factory.
You can chose from the Ocelot Unit, GRU and KGB, until you've won enough matches to play as popular characters like Ocelot and Snake.
Hideo Kojima wrote:"Finally it is possible to battle with players from around the world online at Metal Gear Solid from the comfort of your own home. For the online mode, the essence of Metal Gear Solid is retained, with additions of various online rules and original stages. With the continued growth of the culture of Metal Gear Solid, this new online addition, I believe will bring a new way to enjoy and experience the world. I hope fans will look forward to experiencing it."

I'd expect you'd be able to play against anyone from any region (or at least I hope so- I'll be buying the Japanese version as soon as it comes out). I often play Online Games on American servers, even though I live in Brtiain.

Ever since MGS3:S online was announced, I've been wondering how they would pull it off (sneaking around levels without being spotted by humans). It occurred to me that they could do what the UT Thief mod does: transparency. In Thief you have the light meter, and when it is totally dark, you are invisible. In the UT Thief mod, since it is multiplayer, what they do is make your character more and more transparent as the light meter darkens. It actually works fine in multiplayer, because you simply cannot see the other person, as long as they stand in a dark enough spot. MGS3 could do something similar, only instead of light, it could use camouflage as the basis. Some camo index values would have to be exxagerated (especially the urban/indoor patterns), and you'd have to be able to switch camo instantaneously (like how MGS2 did it with the russian suit), but it could be done. I would make it so the correct camo would yield 100% automatically when prone, then a bit less when crawling, and a lot less when crouching or walking. Stalking should be totally silent, walking/running obviously not, but still doable at a distance. I'd also take off camo points when aiming a weapon, probably based on the size of it (handgun/grenade, SMG/MG, RPG).
Of course, people are people, and you can bet your ass this will lead to players tossing grenades left and right, just in case. Opinions?
EDIT: I actually did the old/new PS2 swap, so I can now go online. How convenient. The trailer mentions USB; does that mean it'll support live voicechat like SOCOM?
