360 to play 200+ Xbox games

This is from Gamespot

Microsoft confirms its next-gen console will play many games for its current-gen console, including Halo, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, Fable, GTA, and more.
After playing coy for months about the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility, Microsoft has finally come clean. The software behemoth announced late Friday that over 200 games from its current-generation console will play on its next-generation console.

As one might expect, Microsoft has made sure all the top Xbox games are supported, including Halo and Halo 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II, Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black, and the three Grand Theft Autos: III, Vice City and San Andreas. A total of 212 Xbox games will be playable on the 360 at launch, though Microsoft says that number will increase.

Friday also brought good news to Xbox Live addicts. Any of the backwards-compatible games will be playable cross-platform between the Xbox 360 and Xbox over Xbox Live. That means would-be Master Chiefs with a 360 can still own their friends playing on current-generation consoles--although the former will see the carnage in higher resolution.

However, there is a catch. To play an Xbox game on the 360, players must first insert the current-gen game into a next-gen console hooked up to Xbox Live. The system will check if the console has the latest emulation software. If not, it will automatically download said software, install it on the 360, restart, and load the original Xbox game. Obviously, a 360 hard drive--which comes with the Halo and Halo 2 software preinstalled--is required to store the backwards-compatibility software.

For 360 owners who either can't or won't log onto Xbox Live, Microsoft offers two other solutions. First, they can go to Xbox.com, download the emulators, burn them onto a CD, and then insert said CD into the 360, which will auto-install the software. The other option is to order a free CD from Xbox.com which will be mailed to the requestor for a "nominal" fee. However, the CD will be mailed out for free to Japanese 360 owners.

A complete list of the Xbox games that will be playable on the 360 when it ships on November 22 is below:

May I ask why all games are not supported? What's so difficult about allowing support for all your games? Sony did it.

I am not defending M$ at all, since I am not impartial on the subject. But Sony had the CPU of the PSOne inside the PS2, only the rest of the machine needed to be emulated.

In this case it is like Bleem! They have to fine tune each emulation of each game to work on the new HW, since it doesn't share a single capacitor in architecture. Well maybe it has a few of those, but it was a sarcastic remark anyway.

I was expecting them to only support Halo and a few more titles as a matter of fact. They have to take this path and this kind of decisions, since time is the best tool they have at hand (maybe the only one aside Live).

I like how they have BMX XXX, Alias, and Barbie Horse Adventure but not Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, Street Fighter Anniversary, or any of the Splinter Cells. That's a bad move on their part... they need to work on it so that all of the Xbox Live titles are playable on launch.

Good to hear, because I was planning on buying a 360 somewhere down the line. My next question would be is how are the old memory cards compatible or is there a way (for example maybe via a cable connection) to transfer game saves from Xbox1 to Xbox360?

The newest EGM says that Xbox files cannot be moved to the 360. All Xbox Live downloads for the original Xbox will be available for free on the Xbox Live marketplace though. The controllers and stuff aren't backwards-compatible either, but if you'd rather use the old controllers over the new ones... the new ones are the best controllers ever put to plastic. Ever.

Wow. They don't get Guilty Gear or Street Fighter either. Not even any of the few Japan-only titles or the Dead or Alive games. Ouch.

Most Japanese XBox owners are die hard FPS fans, so it's a shock to see so few of them supported. No Steel Battalion either? Microsoft's potential hold on the Japanese market is waining already.
I played a 360 in Glasgow, yesterday. I must say I was really disappointed. I played Kameo, which really had nothing new to offer. I don't think they've added anything from the existing GameCube code, as The Wind Waker still seems more impressive. I'd like to play Project Gotham 3 before I gave up on the console for a while, but for the time being, I don't think Microsoft have pushed themselves at all.

Unless you have an HD monitor you're not going to see that big a difference in the 360 graphics from a game like, say, Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. I can't say enough good things about that controller though... it's amazing that it took somebody as long as it did to come up with the truly perfect controller.

For now, it's one of the most solid controllers I've seen. I hope this'll send Sony back to the drawing boards with their boomerang. But honestly, I'm more excited for Nintendo's controller and the revolution it will provide for games. Finally they've given us a controller that's innovative, yet not completely lost in the lay-out like those for GameCube and N64.

Personally, the 360's controller just felt like a XBox S-Pad with Shoulder Buttons... nothing special.

Ahh, but let's not forget the center button that allows your lazy ass to turn the system on without ever leaving your seat.

Therein lies the brilliance. The black and white buttons were ridiculous and were really hard to use... at certain points during MGS2 I had to actually place the controller on a tabletop and use three fingers on the face buttons, more of a personal problem since it didn't occur to me at the time that I could've used my arcade stick for the game... too bad I couldn't use it with the Tony Hawk's Underground games, which also require hitting multiple face buttons, including the black buttons, at once. The 360 moves these buttons to the shoulders and makes them feel like the Z Buttons on the Gamecube controller, plus the shallowing out of the shoulder buttons helps a lot.

They're still just shoulder buttons. You wonder why Microsoft didn't design them for the XBox from the start. They've been around since the SNES days.

Exactly, It's hardly a fantastic innovation, or a near-perfect idea. The 360's pad is essentially a Dual Shock with triggers, now. I'm more satisfied with some Third Party controllers (especially my Wireless Logitech controller).

It was really hard to move while holding the gun out, shoot, and switch to First-Person mode to get a good shot out on some of the bosses. As for the "it's just shoulder buttons" thing, it really does make a big bit of difference. The main thing most people I know and I hated about the Xbox controller were the black and white buttons, they were just ridiculous. The shoulder buttons (which are more like the Z button on the Gamecube controller than anything) plus the shallower triggers make for a great controller. Sure, it's not a fantastic innovation, it's not even really an innovation, but in an industry where people hardly, if ever, go by the "If it's not broke, don't fix it" mentality, the controller is a fantastic piece of hardware.

I thought you ment the PS2 controls anyway i find the controls for the Xbox version of MGS2 is a little good but the white and black bottons are ruining it however just be glad you don´t play it on PC
