Hmm. Vol.1, huh? I'm guessing they're planning on doing a series of these. Wonder what could they have in store for a Vol. 2?

Gah, I'm not going to have enough money to pick up the game when it gets released though... I'm thinking I might have to pre-order, get the disc, and cancel the pre-order a week later.

"In a recent press release, Kojima Productions announced that fans who pre-order the latest addition to the Metal Gear franchise, "METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE" will recieve a limited edition DVD that documents the series timeline from game to game in chronological order. Titled "Metal Gear Saga, Vol. 1", this special disc is exclusive to North America and will be given to players upon preordering the game, starting this February.

The documentary, produced by Hideo Kojima and directed by Ryan Payton, has a running time of thirty minutes spanning five chapters:

CHAPTER 001 MGS3: SNAKE EATER ( 1964 )

CHAPTER 002 METAL GEAR ( 1994-1995 )

CHAPTER 003 METAL GEAR 2: SOLID SNAKE ( 1999 )

CHAPTER 004 MGS ( 2005 )

CHAPTER 005 MGS2: SONS OF LIBERTY ( 2007-20XX )

A narration to the documentary is being performed by Jack N. Merluzzi, who is best known for his english voice acting work in "TEKKEN 5", "MUSASHIDEN II: BLADE MASTER", and as Zero in "ROCKMAN X7". He will also be providing the narration for the "Existence" disc, which will be included with the first edition release of "METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE".

Also included in the documentary are a series of candid interviews with Hideo Kojima, who discusses his thoughts on the infamous "Snake's Revenge" as well as what gamers can look forward to in the next installment to the "METAL GEAR" franchise, "METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE <B>Patriots</B>".

The "Metal Gear Saga, Vol. 1" DVD also includes a collection of every game trailer created by Kojima Productions, including those for "METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE <B>Patriots</B>".

The list is as follows:

- METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (E3 2005)

- METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (TGS 2005)

- METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE (E3 2005)

- METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE (GC 2005)

- METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE (TGS 2005)

- METAL GEAR AC!D 2 (E3 2005)

- METAL GEAR AC!D 2 (TGS 2005)

The DVD will come in a special package featuring a foil-embossed cover designed by "METAL GEAR" series art director Yoji Shinkawa, and will be released in mid-February, marking the advent of the METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE pre-order campaign.

"METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE" is currently slated for North American release on March 14, 2006."

Now that's what I call a pre-order bonus. Seriously, that's perfect.

In the US/Japan/etc (unlike Mexico, though Liverpool did respect it with Zelda Wind Waker) when you pre-order something, they usually give you the pre-order item ahead. It can also be given the same day of release, only to the pre-orders.

You can preorder it at gamestop or other us online store. In Mexico there are a few stores taking pre-orders now.. but I don't believe they'll get the bonus item. They will probably sell it if they get their hands on one.

Okay, but the question is when will the Saga DVD become available in stores? Will it only be handed out on release or what?

It will be handed out starting a certain day in mid-February. If you pre-order it then, you'll get it then, but if you've already pre-ordered, you'll need to go to the store the day it becomes available there in order to pick it up.

Has anyone received their disc yet? I checked at my pre-order store a few days ago and they still haven't received any copies.

Apparently, only those who order the game online through GameStop will receive it now. Everyone else will just have to wait until the game arrives.

Mid-February my ass.

I know it's free and everything, but does anyone else think it's kinda...lacking? It's basically telling fans what they know about the seres (apart from some new development materials) plus trailers. I would've liked to have seen another behind the scenes film, like in the European MGS2, where they talk about MGS3 extendedly.

So what new behind-the-scenes stuff do they reveal aside from the obvious (i.e: Snake's Revenge inspired MG2, Raiden was bases on Leonardo DiCaprio)?

Saga spoilers:

From what I've gathered (I won't be getting Saga until tomorrow, hopefully), it mentions that Kojima's original idea for The Boss was to have her fully expose one of her breasts during her boss battle. It would've had a tattoo of a snake on it, and it would jiggle whenever she fired her gun. This would've made it seem like the tattoo was 'laughing' at you.

From a source at IGN:
"Why Raiden is the way he is:

Kojima said the development team took a survey of just women who don't ordinarally play games and he mention that one survey said something like "Snake is old! I don't care about stupid old people. I'd never buy this game!" So the dev team was depressed about it and he decided to try and do something about it and Raiden was the result.

Original plot for MGS2:

The game was originally going to be set in Iran and Iraq. An aircraft carrier was rumored to be heading somewhere and Snake had to stop it before it reached its destination. Liquid Snake and his "gang" (Fox Hound I assume) were going to show up to hijack it. They decided to change it because things were "heating up" in the Middle East about 6 months into development.

MGS4:

There wasn't a whole lot. Kojima said that the game was going to be the end of the current saga and that he was going to try to include as many old characters as possible. Not much else."

And Kojima is also reported to have made the comment that MGS4 will explain everything, like how Vamp can't die, what happened to Olga's child, and how Liquid can possess Ocelot.

I've heard all those before, except for maybe The Boss breast thing.

As for the MGS2 dvd, I don't remember much about it since it's been 4 years since I've seen it, and I only saw it once, but my overall impression of it was that it was worth it and generally informative.

I got my copy today but am stuck at work. I'll try to give a review after I get home.

I got my Saga DVD yesterday and I too found it to be underwhelming. They were pushing this as "Everything you wanted to know about Metal Gear and some", but in reality it's nothing more than "Metal Gear for Dummies". Half of the stuff Kojima reveals in the interview has already been documented in various interviews and other sources. The MGS2 Making DVD was more informative than this when it came to development info.

I'm hoping that the further volumes Kojima Pro are planning will go more in-depth than Vol. 1 did.

P.S: Did anyone think it was cheap for the editing staff that they had to use a fanart from a website to show how Metal Gear TX-55 looks like?
