Johnny Undaunted wrote:Because you're calling one game a ripoff of another, when in reality they're two distinct games that only share a common theme that's already commonplace among Japanese games and anime to begin with. That's why. It's as idiotic as calling Resident Evil a Splatterhouse-ripoff, when the two games are nothing alike save for the horror theme.
Okay, perhaps rip-off is a bit harsh. Borrowed would be a better word. It's just hard to draw a line between the two these days. But there is undoubtedly a greater similarity between Horned Owl and Policenauts than there is between Resident Evil and Splatterhouse. The horror theme tends to be a little brooder in comparison to the giant mecha police force anime genre. I mean, how many other games besides Horned Owl resemble Policenauts to that degree?

A rip-off has a negative connotation, is usually flagrant, and is almost always unauthorized.

"Borrowing" an idea can be either good or bad depending on context. It's often used to suggest that something started off with someone else's idea, and then went with it to make it better, or put its own unique spin on things.

For example:
Snatcher borrows heavily from classic detective shows and comic-book imagery. This sort of sentence is used to explain the atmosphere of such a game.

on the other hand, if someone were to come up with a game today about a futuristic detective and his robot friend fighting other robots that took over people's brains, it'd probably be considered a ripoff of Snatcher. Especially if the main character was named "Jillian" or something :)

Ahh, English... fun with language.

Best point n click game ever in my opinoun has to be Broken Sword 1, closely followed by Broken Sword 2 and The Secret Of Monkey Island, some of the greatest games ever made, with amazing levels of detail and great GREAT storys, u must play these games, and if ur going to get Broken Sword, its gd on every platform but i think PC is the best, Voices are there, some of the best voice acting ever infact, its faster than the PSX version and of course, u can use the mouse, unless u have a PSX mouse
