Does anyone know what the hell this thing is?

A forum to talk about stuff that doesn't fit in other categories, such as general Kojima games discussion, other games, etc.

Does anyone know what the hell this thing is?

Post by 8bitsonic »

I recently ordered a complete Genesis copy of Sonic The Hedgehog (sic) for the Genesis off eBay not long ago, for $12 US. The reason I bought it is because in the picture, the box appeared to have the PAL box art, with the Genesis logo. The problem, of course, is that the Genesis was not released under that name in Europe; it retained its original name, the Mega Drive. The game just came today, and I've been trying to find other pictures of it online, but I haven't been able to do so. What is this thing? It's definitely not a bootleg. Either some oddball Canadian version, or perhaps a "World" version, like with arcade games?

Enjoy these high-quality scans and blurry snapshots, and hopefully somebody can tell me where the hell this thing was released:

Front cover. Notice it still says "Mega Drive" in the text at the bottom. http://jesnetplus.com/~swillman/front.jpg

Back cover. Notice how this too looks completely different from the regular Genesis version, with the multiple European languages. http://jesnetplus.com/~swillman/back.jpg

The inside of the box. http://jesnetplus.com/~swillman/000_0023.JPG

The manual, which is horizontally oriented to accomodate the eight lanugages. http://jesnetplus.com/~swillman/000_0025.JPG

The cartridge itself. http://jesnetplus.com/~swillman/000_0026.JPG

Well? Any ideas?

A search for the bar code revealed the following:

It is the canadian version indeed.

Intersting...I had checked for copies of the game on eBay Canada, and they all had the American boxart...interesting. Still, it seems the Canadian version is somewhat uncommon, if not downright rare- I had never seen it before.

Hah!

But seriously, perhaps some copies of the Canadian version used the US box art, and some used the PAL box art? I seriously have not been able to find another picture of my copy.

I got Sonic the Hedgehog for free from a friend along with a Sega Genesis and four or five other games (one of which was Gunstar Heroes, one of the best games I've ever played).

It was one of the best days ever.
