New TGS info on 4, PO, and DGN2

Post by Marc »

Here's some new info that came out at TGS.

MGS4:

- The game system is more or less in place now, so they'll really start fleshing out the rest of the game. However, he says it'll be quite a while before it's completed, so it looks like next winter (and not July) will be the release period.

- Besides the 12-inch Snake figure, there are a number of other merchandise goods being planned.

- Kojima revealed they went to a Middle Eastern country, a South American country, and several eastern European countries for the game's research. These are possibly the locations in which the game takes place.

- Kojima said that a group in the game uses real people, as in people in our world, and one of them is Yumi Kikuchi, a co-host of Hidechan. They then showed a CG model they made of Yumi, and said they put her face through several layers of digital make-up, and then... And that's where he said he couldn't say anymore. But he did say, "Why do they need to use real people? You'll have to play the game to find out." My guess is that it's part of the psychological warfare element of the game. I bet they'll have soldiers who look like staff members, too.

- Finally, Kojima said you'll be about to control aspects of the opening titles of the game, like Snake Eater, only this time it'll be even more amazing. He said, "Konami's customer help lines will be ringing off the hook the day the game comes out."

MGS PO

- Kojima said the hard part about making Ops is whent they change the story for Ops, MGS4's story changes, too. Likewise, when they change 4's story, Ops has to be changed as well. He said he won't have a clear vision of 4's story until Ops is completed.

MGS DGN2

- Kojima said he wants people to play DGN2 before 4 as the two stories are closely connected. It sounds like DGN2 might have story elements not present in MGS2.

Metal Gear My Page

- It appears you'll be able to upload your own fan fiction to the website as well. Kojima said, "Maybe we can make MGS5 10 years from now with everyone's ideas."

Very interesting, thanks a lot man.

I am ok with them interwining the titles, but it might be perceived as a way too commercial tool to sell. It it a tough desicion. I rather have nice side stories in the other games that interwine gracefully... or less games?

I hope this is the last batch though.

I'd just rather see him get away from MG altogether and go back to science fiction.

That's what I hope for as well.

Yeah, they said that DGN2 or the one that takes place during MGS2 will focus a lot more on Snake than the game did, so that's good. Also, I think we'll get a clearer sense of what Big Boss really wanted. I know there's a good reason behind Outer Heaven, one that the Boss would agree with. I want to believe that.

Remember that Kojima never intended for the game to be made into a series, so he's probably going to retcon some stuff.

Like Snake's Reve-- *gets shot at by a sniper from off-screen* :P

But seriously;

Um, ok? That could be any number of things...

Are you telling me Metal Gear isn't science-fiction? Geez, that's a scary thought. Well, I do agree Kojima needs to break away from the series. I won't be particularly critical of what he chooses to do after MGS4, just as long as he's not re-treading old gameplay elements; no more stealth, solar sensors, or point-and-click adventures (unless he decides to port Snatcher and Policenauts to one of the current systems). And I'm hoping he doesn't exect us to shell out more money for a revamped edition of MGS4, the way he has with MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3. These doiuble-dips are becoming a bad habit, even with all the tremendous extra features included. The next-gen games are expensive enough as is. But I would wager ZoE3 is pretty much a given for his first post-MGS4 project.

I don't think it's pure science fiction, no. Not compared to Snatcher or Policenauts, where he crafts these detailed worlds with loads of supplementary information. Metal Gear is much more closely based on our world, and it's also closer in a temporal sense.

I don't see that great a difference between the world of Policenauts and the world of Metal Gear, aside from the fact that Policenauts takes place further in the future. Policenauts, Snatcher, and Metal Gear are all grounded in reality to a large extent. Perhaps you could argue that Snatcher and Policenauts are more character driven, and Snatcher certainly contains more elements of fantasy than Kojima's other games, but I wouldn't say either is greater in the proponent of sci-fi. The themes of MGS2 in particular, deal with our society rapidly becoming more modernized and man's attempt to catch up with his own creations. I don't think you can get any more sci-fi than that.

I guess I should have made myself more clear. Metal Gear takes elements from our world and carries them over, whereas Snatcher and Policenauts thinks about how current trends in science will impact the future. Most of Metal Gear's technical information is carried over from our world and not further developed, but Snatcher and Policenauts are more creative with their science fiction - in Snatcher, the composition of the Snatchers, the makeup of society (see the information in JORDAN), and its alternate history. Policenauts goes even further. It probably has the most well though-out world I've seen in any game. Its database has about 170 entries directly related to the game. Everything from the composition of different types of artificial blood in use, and how these are necessary in the era of space exploration, to drugs, organ transplantation, the genetic engineering of a special class of humans for space exploration, the equipment on spaceplanes... Its vision of the space age is more plausible than any book's or film's I've come across. So I think there's a difference. MG and MG2 were mostly action. You have OILIX in MG2; cloning in MGS1 (though that's science fact); MGS2 had some sci-fi in it, yeah, but not to the level of his previous games, as we're living in the kind of world of information control it discusses; and MGS3, like MG and MG2, was pretty bare on the science fiction. I guess I mean the more creative Kojima, where he researches the material for the game by himself - the subjects he's going to take up in the game - for a straight year or so before actually moving into development.

I only hope that Kojima isn't lost on all the technological advances that games have made since creating Policenauts and Snatcher. I would think Kojima is putting in just as much to the research of Metal Gear as he did into Policenauts, but he focuses it on different areas. While he may have spent time studying medical sciences before writing Policenauts, he spends his time doing combat exercises before designing MGS4. So I hope it isn't a sign of the times that he should focus more of his attention on the action elements than the informational elements. I think Kojima needs to create more story-based games like Policenauts in the future, that put his creative side to better use than games like Metal Gear.

He said in his write-up on the game in 2003 that Policenauts was the last game where he was able to focus solely on creating, without having to worry about the production aspect. I went back and checked and he said he spent about 2 years researching and planning it. It was during that time that one of the staff inspired him to make MG2; he was supposed to move on to Policenauts next, but he put it on hold for MG2, SD Snatcher, and Snatcher CD-ROMantic.
