PS2 Import Console for MGS 1-3 japanese.

Post by Charlie Johnson »

I just ordered a japanese PS2 Slim with MGS2 SoL japanese version. I'm living in europe and wondered if I could just use an european 100-240V PS2 AC adaptor, for the japanese console as an alternative for a step down converter..

You should be able to use a Euro Slim PS2 AC adaptor with your Japanese Slim PS2 (though you can also just use the Japanese PS2's AC adaptor). All you need after that is a plug adaptor to make the plug fit the wall socket.

The japanese AC adaptor? According to Playasia, where I ordered the japanese PS2, the japanese AC adaptor has only 110V. If that's true I definitly can't use it...at least not without a step down converter. Anyway, then I'll give it a try with the european AC adaptor.

And another question about the japanese version of MGS2, I know Substance has english voice over, so I ordered SoL, with japanese voice over. But I'd also like to have the VR Missions and the Snake Tales. Isn't there some kind of Substance re-release with japanese voice over or are they all in english?

Oh, I didn't know it only had 110V... That's strange. Every other Japanese electronic I bought in Japan has a 100-240V AC. I think you should be fine just switching the AC adaptors, but you might want to ask on a PS2 forum or something first to be sure. That's not something you want to fry!

At least that's what Playasia says.

Okay, I'll do that and make 100% sure first, that's really not something I want to happen, especially when I'm thinking about how much money I've already spent for this thing...:-/

Sorry, I forgot to asnwer your other question. No, all versions of Substance have English voices, same goes for MGS1 Integral. MGS3 Subsistence has Japanese voices, though.

Damn, that means I'll have to buy it twice to get the VR missions too.

And is there any reason, why they used the english VA? I think most of the people in japan would prefer the japanese VA and...at least for me...the biggest reason for a japan import is the original japanese VA. Otherwise I could just buy the US version.

Kojima said he thought an English MGS sounded nice after he first heard the voices in the game and he wanted people in Japan to hear them. Other games like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X do this as well, releasing English-voice versions after the Japanese release. The attitude towards dubbing in Japan is the same anywhere else - some people like the original voices (Twin Snakes was criticized by some for having no Japanese voice track in the Japanese version), others like to hear the dubbed track. I think they ditched the English voices for MGS3 Subsistence because of the movie disc. I myself prefer the Japanese voices because I think they're more consistent and conscientious about their work. The flip side of this is you don't get accents (British, Russian, etc.) in them.

Sorry, I kind of skimmed through the topic, so I don't know if this has been cleared up, but I live in Europe and I use a Japanese slim-line PS2 for import games. I don't require a step-down converter for this, plugging a regular European PS2 cable into the AC adapter, and plugging that into the wall works fine. As long as you have the regular European PS2 cable or a simular cable, and a 60Hz compatable TV, it should work fine without extra equipment.

Aye, good to know.

And what about this 3rd party AC Adaptor for the PS2? Do you think it'll work as well.

And here's the same in english.

So the japanese PS2 Slim AC Adaptor's input is 110-240V?

Propably a mistake by Play-Asia then.

Thanks, but not necessary...although, now that you've mentioned it.;)

Yeah, it would be nice if you could do that, when you have the time.

Again a little question conerning the japanese MGS versions.

At least the PAL version of MGS1 has a little problem with the last cutscene after the credits (The Ocelot/Solidus dialogue) when the game is played on a PS2. The game just freezes after the credits. Does this happen with the japanese MGS1 version as when I play it on a PS2?

Newer PS2s don't have that problem, as the emulation software is updated. The PS2 I have was only bought last summer, so I don't have the problem. I don't have the regular japanese MGS, either (I only have Integral, although I'll probably buy the original for the voice acting)

Sorry, I completely forgot about this. The camera tends to jerk around and focus on unimportant things a lot because I only have one free hand, and I didn't move my set-up around for the video, but I have uploaded it on YouTube.

Yup, thanks, than it should work for me as well, but I have to wait a little longer anyway...Play-Asia seems to need a little longer, the shipping date was scheduled to be on 1 Dec, but until know, the order is still being prepared.:(

So, I just finished the japanese version of MGS2 yesterday, the japanese voice acting is far better, than the english one, but for some reason the japanese version has some slowdowns, for example in the tank hangar where the marines are standing, those slowdowns aren't in the PAL version.

Anyway, now I want to buy the japanese versions of MGS and MGS3 too, so my question is, what do you know about this version?

http://cgi.ebay.de/SONY-Play-Station-ME ... dZViewItem

Is it the original MGS complete with japanese voice acting?

I'm pretty sure that every Japanese version of MGS, other than Integral, features Japanese voice acting.
There's no English language version of MGS3 available for Japanese PS2s (even Subsistence was in Japanese).

That version of MGS1 you bought off eBay has Japanese voices. It says so on the spine card.
