Adventure games; have they disappeared in recent years?

A forum to talk about stuff that doesn't fit in other categories, such as general Kojima games discussion, other games, etc.

Adventure games; have they disappeared in recent years?

Post by Henry Spencer »

Many people claim in the gaming community; that adventure gaming has declined in recent years, do you agree with this? I personally do in some regards, sure there are a lot less (criminally so) titles in my favourite genre about these days unless you look to the PC. Disappointing is the only word I can find myself using when thinking about this. Is this perhaps due to style over substance? It seems even Kojima has moved to this bandwagon; with MGS4 turning into an all out action title...shame too, since I loved Kojima's games for their equal dose of suspense and calm, not for non-stop thrills (you know what I mean).

I hope something spectacular happens for the adventure genre again, so it can be the forerunner for next-gen consoles instead of all of these silly racing and FPS titles coming out nowadays.

Anyway, thoughts?

There has definitly been a decline in pc adventure games within the last few years...hell theres been a decline in pc games, well at least in quality.

The last good adventure game I played was Dreamfall, which ended up being kind of a let down in comparison to The Longest Journey. It was still great and everything but Dreamfall has the biggest cliffhanger ending I have ever seen in any game. Ragnar said after the release of the game that it was part 1 of either a 2 part story or a trilogy....so the last good adventure game I played was only a half or maybe even a 3rd...so it turns out i havent played a good full adventure game in years.

The new sam and max episodes are pretty good though, but not as good as the original.

I remember Kojima commenting, kind of lamenting, on his radio show one time about how adventure games aren't popular anymore. There are differences between Japanese and Western adventure games (in Japan most adventure games are what we would call a digital comic), but there are also similarities. Off the top of my head, I'd say the widepsread diffusion of 3D is to blame. Most of the adventure games we all love are 2D, and developers have to cater to what has the highest chances of selling in a casual consumer-driven market.

You have graphically "3D" versions of adventure games (like the new Sam and Max), but these are really the same type of game at the end of the day. With the diffusion of 3D came genres like the first person shooter, and it seems it's the gameplay style and not the graphics that turns people off. People are too used to the fast-paced gameplay of action games and FPSes. Sure, there were action games before, but back then adventure games were graphically on the same par with them. Try pitting a traditional adventure game today against a game like HL2... There's just no contest in certain respects. Of course, that doesn't mean the adventure game isn't worth playing, but most of today's core market are going to pass on it.

That's the sad part of it all. I can understand why people look upon video games as nothing more than 'kid's entertainment' with the games coming out nowadays. Truly upsetting stuff. I think game's quality on the whole had declined in years overall anyway, there is clearly no storyline inputted into Gears Of War for example, it is pretty much a fun way to spend a weekend stuck in because of the rain (a good rental), but nothing more then that.

I want games that grab me, pull me in and don't let go all the way through the game dammit!

Well, we still have the Resident Evil games (funny that the fourth title in that also has more style with tons of action, put into the game [ala MGS4]) and that upcoming Lost Planet, which seems to me might have a good storyline along with great gameplay. So, all I can say is, thank God for Capcom and Konami!

Though it sounds stupid, I really wish that the gaming industry wasnt based on money. If the creators didnt care about how much they made then we would still have amazing games today.Games that were made for the fans and not the media whores. But it is all about the money, so we have to deal shit games that are made purely to please little kids who just want to shoot stuff and call people nooobz.

I cant decribe how much I hate this "Next Generation" of crap, there hasnt been one good game in my opinion. That worst part about it is the fact that PC gaming followed right along side the next gen...followed it right off a bridge.

The only game im actually looking foward to is Dreamfall 2...thats it. Use to be a huge Final Fantasy fan, but all these weak sequels popping up like weeds have lead to my distaste for the series, MGS4 may be good, but i was never a big fan mgs anyway, the million fps's coming out will probably blur into one big steamy pile of crap...I hate the next gen.

I agree with you buddy, all of the games are aimed towards kids nowadays. Thankfully after MGS4, Kojima is going to make new titles once more! Great news if you ask me, despite how much I love MGS, I just want to see it all end and see what else Kojima can do and prove to the gaming industry what he can do, we have all seen it with Snatcher and Policenauts, I'm really excited what he will do next!
