Why is Prince of Persia so hard????

Why is Prince of Persia so hard????

Post by JunkerMike »

Now I know this is supposed to be a legendary game and all, but I never knew of its existance until 1996. I never played it until 1998 when my brother and I had played a ROM of the Sega Master System version. We noticed that it was similar to a game we had first played like 4 or 5 years prior to playing this. You should all be familiar with this one too:Flashback - The Quest for Identity. Anyway, my brother and I hated that game, because we had NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT TO DO! And we couldn't figure out how to jump in another direction other than upward. Anyway, back to POP, since this is what that's about. I figured out how to jump forward in this game, but I just couldn't get into it. This year I decided to revisit it. I played ROMs of three different versions just a while ago, the SNES one, the NES one, and the Game Boy one. I really wanna give this game a chance. I know it can be enjoyed, but it's really hard!!!!! Recently purchased the Sega CD port from somebody online a few hours ago. Looks promising with those anime cut scenes in that version, but I don't know. Shortly after I found out that that version was programmed by Bits Laboratory, and they're infamous for developing the NES/Famicom cart based on Ghostbusters. I'm trying to give this game a chance, and hopefully I will get the hang of it 100% and enjoy it.

Challenges exist to be overcome (learn to enjoy it ;)). In general most newer games seem to lack the difficulty you'd find in certain shmups or other arcade converts during the eighties/nineties, so I'd guess general reference levels on difficulty aren't the same as they were back then (and that's why some of the games come off as being harder to master).

Exactly and a lot of the games didn't have difficuly levels either; you were just thrown into the the game with no choice of how hard or easy to make the game. It just progressively, over time throughout the game become harder and harder, in most cases. I loved that.

Read the instruction manual.
Flashback is one of the greatest games I've ever played (definitely in my top three Megadrive games, at least).

Gimme a break! I was only 7 or 8 when I first played it. Anyway, I played it again last night.

I've never heard of "Another World", unless you mean "Out of This World".

Another World was renamed Out of This World in North America.

Ah, yeah, I played a ROM of the SNES version of that before. Nice concept. But the speech is so FUCKING DISTORTED! Like that one part where you break out of the cage, and that guy taps you on the shoulder, and he says "Let's move on", it sounds like he's saying "Nice move, boss!" or "Nice move, son!" or something else. I'm not sure if that's what I thought he was saying the first time I heard it. But yeah, not bad. Never did get past that point though.

I believe the aliens' speech is supposed to be a fictional language, not English.

I've had Flashback (Sega CD version) sitting around for a while now - I've tried to get into it on a few occasions but never managed. I guess I haven't given it enough attention.

Mmm, yeah, it is.... I finished that game for the first time in my life, after playing it as a kid and thinking it was damn scary. I died so many times lol.... But man, I really love games like that, its so completely purile in its execution because of the goals of the designers in mind.... Don't play the SNES version (even tho it was a good port), get the special edition PC version!!

I believe it was actually just one guy who designed and developed the entire thing (Erik Chahi).

Yeah, the high-res anniversary edition looks nice. I need to pick it up.

Well I got the SCD version of PoP finally today, and I find myself really hooked on it. I'm surprised I'm not playing Lords of Thunder (which I also got today) more than this. I also like the anime-style cutscenes (even though they have bad voice acting), and The Princess looks rather cute in this version:

Yeah, Chahi, and the music composer... It is real nice, you should pick it up if you can find it lol...
SCD PoP? That's retarded.... Weird port... Not the strangest port I've ever seen tho...
