Metal Gear Acid Story = WTF?!

*****SPOILER WARNING**************
If you have any plans of buying MGA and playing the game in regard of it’s story I really suggest that you don’t read this topic. I recently talked with someone who lives in Japan and he finished MGA. So I basically spoiled the whole story in this topic.
*****SPOILER WARNING**************

To say the least MGA story is the most “out of the world” Metal Gear story I heard.

Metal Gear Acid takes place in 2016 when 2 little Marionettes (Elsie and Francis) take over a plane containing many passengers including Senator Vigo Hatch (a fat bearded man with an ego problem). Hatch is said to be the promising next president of US. So off course US want him back. The Marionettes demand that they get the data on “Pythagoras” if they want all the 500+ passengers back.

The only problem is “Pythagoras” is a research project started by BEAGLE corp. in Tejan Republic of South Africa. Without any support from that government and the situation getting out of hand, US send in a Special Forces elite group under the codename: HRT. But before this group can find out any details on this project they get totally wiped out by the Lt. Leone forces. You later find out he is the leader of a huge Mercenary group that has sided with the anti-government forces in the past Civil War in that nation.

Out of options, the government decides to call in Solid Snake, a retired veteran of Fox-Hound to go infiltrate Lobito Island to get this “Pythagoras” data. Snake is called back to duty by Commander Roger McCoy, a CIA agent and a “war buddy” of Campbell. He is also supported by Alice Hazel, a very mysterious woman with psychic powers. She has what’s called “Distant See Through.” She can tell Snake which way to go, where a certain person is and also sometimes sense danger.

Once there at the island (and few levels later) Snake meets the sole survivor of the HRT team, Teliko Friedman. He also meets Gary… some guy on the island who is not really that much of a focal point in the story. As the story goes along we find out that “Pythagoras” is actually the code name for the data of a new Metal Gear. The 2 men who headed the project are William Fleming and Hans Davis.

They both also did a project called “Insect Poison Ceremony.” It was a project where some children (forgot the #) were locked in a warehouse until only one of them was alive and the survivor is called Neoteny. This Neoteny is able to control ACUA injected people, and make them obey into becoming slaves/soldiers.

This warehouse becomes the turning point in the story. In this Warehouse you fight Leone. Also at this point Gary shows up and tells who he really is. He is none other than William Fleming. Not only that he says “Solid Snake” is not who he says he really is. He says snake is actually Hans Davis, but with conjured images and memories to make him think that he is Solid Snake.

Snake not understanding what he is talking about, he just takes the Pythagoras Data from Fleming and get the hell out of there. But on there way though Dream Town, Teliko turns on Snake and attacks him. But after the battle (and her defeat) we find out that she was controlled all along till after you fought her. She has no idea what was going on and needs the whole situation explained (she asks who Snake is).

Rest of the plot is basically what can be expected, “snake” fighting a Metal Gear, fighting Leone, uncovering the truth on The Neoteny and saving the day again.

But basically, we don’t play Solid Snake. We play as someone named Hans Davis who looks like Snake and has memories of Snake. MGA really has no links to any other Metal Gear games story wise. The only real story/character connection is Campbell being a friend of Roger. Other than that link, MGA is full of new characters with a totally new location and an unrelating story.

But when it comes to gameplay and cards, just about every Metal Gear character is featured (including MG1 and MG2 characters). For some characters, when you use there card you see a small clip featuring that character before it’s used. (like for EVA card where it shows the clip from MGS3 where she is crawling in here swimsuit)

But…wow what a story.

Yeah, I heard about all this crap while lurking the GameFaqs forum (I never had any intention of buying a PSP for MGA). It's funny how Konami keeps reducing Solid Snake's presence in the series with each subsequent Metal Gear game that came out since MGS. First by making him into a mere supporting character in Sons of Liberty (don't give me anything shit about Raiden being the narrator, it's him and not Snake who takes out most of the bad guys), then into a mere cameo appearance in Snake Eater (just so they could let Naked Snake/Big Boss have his own game) and now they give us a Fake Snake in Acid (thank God it's just a side-game). It's like Konami has made into a hobby to deprive us of Solid Snake. At this rate, they might even take out Snake completely from the series.

BTW, there's also Snatcher and Policenauts-themed cards in the game too (only Mika Slayton and Karen Hôjô AFAIK though). How many old-school Metal Gear cards are there? Does it include bosses?

Also, what's exactly Hank McCoy's relation to Campbell? Is he like an ex-FOXHOUND buddy like Mark "Falcon" Cortez or something like that?

Ok, I just finnished the game..................here's my rant. Anyone else who has, please share the hate.

1. Snake's character art design makes him look like an emo bitch.
2. It's not really a game in tradition of all "metal gear." In fact, not a game at all (it sucks. IT JUST SUCKS!)
3. It just looks like another way to produce money and liability on a new console market.
4. I can take a shit in a box just like this game, mass produce it, commercialize it, and slut it across the gaming scene and make it look like something big amongst a gathering of posers. Oh wait, that was Halo 2 also.
5. This is a horrible game., I can't believe I spent money on it to go with my imported psp, amongst Japan's bastard economy rates. AND BASTARD THEY ARE!
6. I really hope this game bombs on USA markets, cause maybe they will learn faster than Capcom did with Super Street Fighter X Biohazard: Code Rock Man Chastity Force Zero.
7. I highly suggest that the developers like Kojima says: get depressed when it bombs, so they can commit hari kari.
8. While playing through this I missed a call, a call from my girlfriend! FROM MY FUCKEN GIRLFRIEND. Now if I wasn't playing this travesty, I would be in bliss.....well I called her back, but thats not the point! It pissed me off!!!!
9. This game's stock ratio equals China's daily abortion rates.
10. This whole game comes from a bastard poser that was an event planner and scripter for SOL & Twin Snakes, which are 2 games that make my erection get really hard! HARD WITH ANGER, AND RAGE!!!! Damn you Shinta Nojiri, may all your kin be fed to angry ferral midgets!!!!

If anyones interested in my head on response, stop by my home town

Ah, i never knew about the Snatcher and Policenauts-themed cards, but i don't know the exact number of the old-school MG cards that are in the game. But what i know is most of the Bosses from the both games are featured.

I don't think he is Ex-Foxhound buddy, more of a "war buddy" so to speak. They both were friends before Campbell became the leader of Fox-Hound i think.McCoy is a CIA agent in the game.

Cool! I should've been more specific though. Do they use actual artwork on the cards or are they just sprite rips from the games? Also, do they still spell Blackcollar's name as "Black Color"?

Not that I remember. You're probably thinking of Brian McBride (the CIA guy who turned out to be a double agent).

No doubt he's out. His trilogy is done. Raiden is next probably, if they continue to shell out sequel after unnecessary sequel, which they undoubtedly will. But who cares? It's like all people even care about is the name. Big Boss in MGS3 was as close to Snake as you'll ever get without it actually being Snake of course. Change is good. Snake had threee games to himself. He was lucky he even got those cameos in the latter two.

Raiden? i think not. MGS2 story and theme will be pointless if players go back to controlling Raiden. "Raiden has "matured" and he is on with his life to pass on his memes. He may be a cool character, but his story is done.

Soild Snake on other hand has no story TBH. Compared to Big Boss, Solid snake has not been fleshed out as a human yet. He still has Fox Die to worry about, <B>Patriots</B>, Olga baby and Hideo Kojima's "promise" to not kill Snake until eveyr Metal Gear dies.

Hideo kojima said Snake is like Gorzilla, a monster created by humans who will stay with humans until he destroys all the monsters(Metal Gears) He said Snake will exist and fight as long as Metal Gear exists.

Raiden on other hand in like King Kong, a animal captured and bought to a place he does not exist. Now he is free to return to his jungle to continue his life.

Solid Snake needs one last Metal Gear game to tie up his storyline and finish it up well. He is the center point of the plot after MGS2 and it's a mystery on what his "stand" on <B>Patriots</B> is. Will he follow the same ways as rest of the Snakes or will he make his own way?

Lot more questions exist about him. It's not a matter of if he is my favorite character or not. To do a sequal well, Soild Snake will have to be present.

Unless Konami wants to just milk the series by keep on streaching the existing plot.

What he said.

Besides, making subsequent installments center on Raiden would be a franchise suicide. at this point. It would be the equalivent of making Revenge of the Sith center around Jar Jar Binks instead of Anakin's transformation to Darth Vader.

Also, there's a complete list of MGA cards in GameFAQs. Apparently, the old-school Metal Gear/Snatcher/Policenauts/Zoe (including Ghost Babel) cards are part of the Chronicle Pack. They only cover some of the characters though and their choices seems questionable (Mika over Jaime and Randam, Running Man over Holly and Natasha/Gustava, Fire Trooper over Schneider and so on).

Interesting and convoluted plot.
Are you sure Kojima didn't scritp it? ;)

Anyway, I haven't played it, but a friend has, and I really like the sound of it.
The gameplay sounds interesting, but I reserve judgement for when Ive played it.

hmm, any Snakes Revenge cards in MGA? Only jesting, I know its not proper canon, but then again neither is acid.

Im glad Kojima has stoped making MG games.
As this very site shows, the man is a genius at games design, especially plot driven games, such as Policenauts and Snatcher. Now that he's free of the franchise I am excited about what new intellectual property he can come up with. Hopefully Konami will give him the freedom to create entirely new and unique. Its what he is good at, and flogging the MG horse, as much as I love the series, is a waste of his talents.... like a pair of underwear your boss won't let you remove. Come on people, Kojima deserves to be able to remove this current pair.

I hope that analogy made sense.

Just a tought...

What would make more sense for the MG 20th anniversary?

- Retelling of original Metal Gear (Outer Heaven)

- Re-imagining of Metal Gear Series (like MGA)

Whatever they have planned we have to wait till E3 2006.

Hope Kojima's new (non MG) project is shown at this years E3.

Or..... how about this:

A pre-MGS Metal Gear game compilation, in the theme of Sonic Jam, arguably one of the finest compilation packages released. (despite lacking Sonic CD which I think is overated)

It would come on a single DVD, and be released on all 3 current formats, and would only cost $20

It would feature ALL the pre-MGS games developed, and THEN SOME. For comprehensive completists sake, it would feature all the different versions, purely for fun:
* Metal Gear 1 - MSX
* Metal gear 1.5 - MSX (the English translation of the Japanese original, so we can see precisely what was left out of the European translation, plus the option for Japanese text)
* Metal Gear - NES/Famicom
* Metal Gear - C64
* Metal Gear - IBM PC
* Metal Gear - Amiga (said to have the best graphics of the NES ports)
* Snake's Revenge - NES (with a clear disclaimer about it being non-canon, I feel it is deserving to held in coversation with the rest of the series)
* Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - MSX2 (original codec artwork)

It would also include other features:
* art gallery containing ads, cover art, concept art, booklet art, fan art, general art etc. from all MG games up to the present
* music gallery containing a track listing of every official MG song (right up to the present day), plus some others made especially for the compilation. In short, hundreds of songs. All of which can be listened to whilst browsing the art galleries
* High res colour booklet scans of every booklet officially released for the games, even the crappy Western translations, though with a disclaimer naming and shaming the fools responsible. The Japanese booklets would also come in a translated form, allowing people to read them the way they were supposed to be read. Snake's Revenge would also have its unreleased Japanese booklet present along with the translation of it. (which I am certain exists in some Konami employee's sock drawer somewhere)
* Merchandise art gallery, highlighting every MG piece of merchandise released. And just to go overboard, a fully scanned and typed copy of the readfull non-canon MG book released. (Konami Im assuming still owns the rights to the book). Explanations and listings for other various items, right up to the present day. Being an anniversary compilation, I am expecting photos and features on even the recent MGS3 tins of snake meat.
* interviews with the leading people behind the long series, Id really like to hear from the veterans who worked on the MSX2 version (these would subbed)
* interviews with gamers and shop assistants (Western and Japanese)
* Miscellaneous trivia, facts and anything else MG related (such as those radio opera things)

and the cappa de cappa:
A 2D metal gear game making program, similar to RPG maker.
Containing sprites from all previous games as well as some newly made ones of recent characters, songs, level maps and layouts, and all of the enemy AI routines, items and their uses, bosses, codec screens etc.

In short, it would give you the ability to edit and create your own fully unique MG game, utilising all the imagery, sounds and items from previous games.

I emphasise the fact that this should be easy to use, easier than RPG maker, and should be fully customisable allowing for FULL and COMPLETE editing of the MG universe. MG games are cell based like Zelda, so in theory it should be easy to manipulate, and I guarantee there will be some fan made games that are completely unique and quite amazing. The MG Universe also has many unique locations etc, meaning theres plenty of material to play around with. Though for vaiety, some new ones could be added.

Oh, and while Im going totally over the top with this deranged idea that will never happen, just for fun, using the above MG Game maker program, they can give us a 2D sprite based version of MGS from the PS1. (and dont even think about telling me that MGS is basically a 3D version of MG2SS, a 2D MGS is something I would seriously consider playing and enjoying)

oh yah, and it should have a worldwide simaltaneous release date.

Sadly, such and idea is unfeasible, difficult to implement and wouldn't gain Konami much profit, so dont expect it anytime soon! :P

EDIT:
actually, since this idea couldnt possibly become any more ridiculous, they might as well chuck in Metal Gear Ghost babel, by having a larger TV screen to work with, it can remove the annoying scrolling that allows guards to see you, but not see them.
Making for a grand total of 10+ MG games on one disc.

Seeing Konami re-release the relatively unknown C64, PC and Amiga versions of MetalGear would surprise me. This type of package would ony really appeal to the hardcore MG fans. I'd buy it if such a game was to come out, but the chances ofthat happening is rediculously low.

I'm gonna be realistic for a moment right now. Konami will never rerelease any of the early 90s Metal Gear pc ports. and here's why:

For one thing, they were not made in-house, but were farmed-out products made by other developers for KoA and for them to rerelease would require getting the license to use the original code from the developers, which is too much of a hassle for a bunch of crappy ports.

And secondly, I doubt Konami (or anyone else in their right mind) would release a compilation consisting of the various versions of the same damn game (no one has ever does), especially when only two of those versions are actually different from each other.

And finally, I don't even think the Amiga version was even completed/developed (the screenshot behind the PC box might as well had been a mock-up for all we know).

Besides, I'm pretty sure everyone will settle with a compilation/relocalization of the old MSX games by themselves (with Snake's Revenge added as a possible bonus or not). Anything else would be asking for too much.

Although I agree with you on the likelihood of a compilation of these games, this point does overlook the GameCube version of Famicom MetalGear (developed by Ultra Games) that came with the Twin Snakes Premium GameCube Pack. I don't know why this version of MetalGear was chosen (especially since the disc was an exclusive to Japan), but it does show that a disc of MetalGear games, including ports, is technically possible.

Just a clarification. Ultra DID NOT make the NES version of Metal Gear or Snake's Revenge for that matter. That's a common misconception from people that should know better. Ultra was merely a sister label Konami of America established during the 80s to publish more NES games in the US due to Nintendo of America's strict five games-a-year limit they imposed over third-parties. Ultra had no actual involvement in the development of the games , as they were just KoA operating under a different label (in the same way Konami of Europe had the Palcom label). All of Konami/Ultra 's games were developed in Japan and the rare western-developed games they published were games they picked up for other developers.

As for the reason why the Famicom Metal Gear was chosen over the MSX version, according to the Japanese Twin Snakes homepage, they thought the Famicom was more suitable for the Premium Package, since both, the NES Metal Gear and Twin Snakes were both made for Nintendo platforms.

Okay, that's the first time I've had that explained to me. I retract the previous comment.

Now that I think about it, an overall Hideo Kojima classics disc would be much more likely, as there have been petitions for American and European re-releases of MetalGear, MetalGear 2: Solid Snake, Snatcher and Policenauts. I'd expect to see ports of the MSX2 versions of both MetalGear games and the PlayStation versions of Snatcher and Policenauts. Penguin Adventure could also be included. I wouldn't expect to see Tokimeki Memorial if it was aimed at the American and European audiences, though. NES MetalGear and Snake's Revenge could probably be included as bonuses, too.
