Does anyone actually like Snake's Revenge?
I don't see what all the fuss is about. Most people seem to only hate it because Kojima wasn't involved in the development, yet he said himself that he enjoyed the game, and I like it alot. To be honest, it's one of my favorite NES games. I also think the music is awesome too. Anybody else share my thoughts?

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't make me think 'bag of crap', but it doesn't make me think 'fountain of all knowledge', either. Hehe.87th wrote:Most seem to either love or hate it, but I don't feel either way about it. It's a nice enough NES action game, but I don't think it's anything special, and I believe that it would have gone past relatively unnoticed if Konami didn't tie it to the MetalGear series.
Well, i don't like the game simply because i don't think it's a good game in general. And it doesn't help that it was such a bad take on the Metal Gear franchise. I tried playing it over and over again, but it's just too much. Like in the beginning where you can't see where you're going, and you're screwed if you step into the searchlights, the ONLY source of light! Litterally!
And i read an article about the game on a different MGS site. Some of the stuff that happens later in the game are really, REALLY weird.
Not that i think that MG1 on the NES was that much better. Who can forget such great moments like "I'M GETTING SLEPPY!!" and "I FEEL ASLEEP!!"
The MG games on MSX was a work of art. I'm so happy they included them into Subsistence! ^_^
It would be so awesome if they made a new portable game in that style for the DS or maybe the GBA. Like Ghost Babel, but with better graphics.

He never said that! In fact, the reason he made MG2:SS is
Wikipedia wrote:Kojima, who was not originally planning on producing a sequel to Metal Gear, didn't know that Snake's Revenge was being produced until he met a member of the Snake's Revenge development staff (from Konami's Famicom division) on a train ride in Tokyo. Kojima was then informed about the development of Snake's Revenge and was told "it's not the authentic Snake, so please create a new Snake game of your own."
I can't understand how you could like SR. It lacks, stealth, it lacks plot, it lacks fairness in the difficulty, it does have a bright orange Solid Snake and some very very bad side-scrolling scenes! But this is just my taste. I hated the game but if you like it, that's your right.

I read it on wikipedia, and several other websites. He never said that!
Wikipedia snipet:
Despite the fact that Snake's Revenge is generally disliked by Metal Gear fans, its importance to the series is quite essential: one could argue that without it, Metal Gear 2 and the following Metal Gear Solid series may have never been created. Kojima has also stated that he enjoys Snake's Revenge and thought it was faithful to the "Metal Gear concept" he had initially envisioned.

Hahaha, you mean you didn't enjoy playing as Solid Orange Snake? Hahaha, I agree with Kojima's assessment - It does emulate the general concept well. I don't think it's horrible (Aside from the side scrolling segments) - The gameplay works and the graphics weren't bad.
Spoiler:
Sure, mainstream games are fun, but you haven't tried Snatcher yet.

Snake's Revenge was better then Contra Force thats for damn sure!
As a kid I liked Snake's Revenge better then Metal Gear interestingly enough. The idea of sneaking and stealth, while not bad or hard to get into game play wise, was a little off for me when I was a kid. (Born in 1979 so you can do the math and see how old I was when Snake's Revenge hit the NES in 1990).
I like the basic action game objective of Snake's Revenge, which to me at the time was how video games were supposed to play like (in my young mind).
While still fun today it has not aged well IMO. The 1st Metal Gear NES (well its called 'Metal Gear'- talking all this '1st' noise ) is more start to finish fun and polished when I play it today- it holds it charm and its gameplay value to me.
No doubt the Kojima touch is where the credit is due on that.

The best thing about SR was the soundtrack. And if it wasn't framed as a Metal Gear game and if it didn't contain the names Solid Snake and Big Boss; it would have been seen as a standard (all be it really hard) everyday game. But because it was supposedly a sequel to MG1 it falls flat on it's face.

Good point, man. The simple fact that it was dubbed as a Metal Gear title made it pretty shitty because it couldn't live up up to the real deal. I'm pretty certain the same game with unique characters would have given it a little more respect in a lot of peoples opinions. The Prince II wrote:The best thing about SR was the soundtrack. Personally I think it doesn't deserve the tarnished reputation it has gotten from Metal Gear fanboys over the years since MGS1 came out. It doesn't help matter that there was much misinformation (and there still is) when this fact came to light. When people learned that Snake's Revenge wasn't canon, everybody merely assumes that "non-canon" means "crap".
But lets take a look back at 1990, when Snake's Revenge and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake both came out. Video game players in North America didn't know what the MSX2 was and probably wouldn't care. They had no way of knowing that there was another Metal Gear sequel made by the original creator that was being released for some obscure computer platform. Hell, nobody back then knew who Hideo Kojima even was or the fact that the original Metal Gear itself was an MSX2 game before there was an NES version.
With that in mind, I doubt Snake's Revenge got the ass-reaming from reviewers back then that it gets nowadays. In my opinion, its a decent enough game on its own and its a masterpiece compared to the half-assed NES port of the first game. I'm kinda surprised the first NES game sold well enough on its own for Konami to commission a sequel, considering it isn't even that great of a game (the game did get a bit of coverage in the early issues of Nintendo Power, so that must had helped).
I don't think Snake's Revenge got retconned per se, but rather that since it never came out in Japan, Kojima had no point of mentioning it in his sequels.

At least Snake's Revenge was intentionally designed to be a Metal Gear game. With Contra Force, Konami basically took a cancelled Famicom game (Arc Hound) that had nothing to do with Contra and then changed the game's title hoping it would sell a few copies. By the time it came out, the NES was already dying and Konami had to rely on established properties (mostly licensed) to sell off its remaining stock of NES cartridges. In fact, their last game for the system was an 8-bit version of TMNT: Tournament Fighter.Snake's Revenge was better then Contra Force thats for damn sure!

I'm still glad that shit wasn't canon. At the time of it's release, yeah I doubt many people knew about MG2: Solid Snake, making Snake's Revenge the sequel to Metal Gear for the majority of North American gamers. But still, now that everyone knows of Metal Gear's true sequel, SR's storyline, gameplay, and anything for that matter can't hold a candle next to MG2.
