Problem running burned Policenauts iso on real PSX

Post by snatcher1996 »

Greetings fellow Policenauts-addicts!

I hope somebody can help me with this. I suppose other people will run into the same troubles as I did:

Since the completion of the patch seems to be just around the corner, I wanted to be sure, to be able to play the translated game as soon as possible. Therefore I ripped my copy of Policenauts using Isoproducer, burned it on CD and gave it a try on my un-modded japanese PSX (SCPH-7000) with the help of an Activator module.

The game started just fine as the original copy, but during the intro movie when Jonathan sits by his desk, the game crashes as soon as the photo of all five Policenauts appears on the screen. I compared my iso file to one I downloaded and they are identical in size (747.752.544 Bytes). I even burned the downloaded iso and it crashes at the exact same moment. I tried different burn speeds and about six different CD-Rs but to no avail. I even tried all copies I burned on an also un-modded PAL PSX (SCPH-5552) but it's all the same.

Since the game starts on both consoles and crashes in the same instant, the Playstations should not be the problem.

Has anyone experienced the same problem or can someone help me with this? Has anyone tried to run a burned copy of Policenauts on a modded console?

Thanks for any help!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an Activator module?

I have two Playstation PAL, early models, both modded but with a chip that bypass the regioncode but doesn't read cd-roms. I guess my best bet is modding my PSP...

It's kind of a cartridge that needs to be plucked into the parallel port, that later Playstation models as well as the PSone lack. Turning on the console will only boot but not start a game placed into the drive, which then can be replaced by an import title or a copied game. I think the Action Replay for the Playstation offered the same functionality. It simply enables the use of a boot-disc and has always worked fine for me. I even competed the japanese original of Policenauts with it (but didn't grasp a whole lot of the story).

I'm curious: Have you tried to run a copied Playstation disc on your modded PSX and have you been able to see the full intro, that is until you can investigate Jonathan's desk?

Something is wrong with your copying method or your burner. PSX machines like Verbatim (Azo) discs burned at 1X speed. The faster you burn the less the laser indents.

Your real problem is the burning software that you're using. Playstation discs have to be burned with certain settings (as do ps2 discs). I would tell you the necessary ones right now, but I don't recall what modes/settings need changing (google is your friend). The alternative that I use is Nero Burning ROM. Nero automatically sets itself up depending on the type of disc it's burning. To do this properly, the disc has to have a ".cue". I would definitely recommend getting the full version, or even just downloading the demo they have on the website (it'll burn cds anyway, just not dvds). Hope this helps.
Also, don't worry so much about cd quality or burn speed. Most PS1s and PSXs can read up to 24x and higher (although lower always works better for cutscenes as they can get a bit choppy at anything above an 8-12x burning speed). As far as type of brand such as verbatim and so forth, it doesn't make that much of a difference unless you're burning ps2 games.

you said, you ripped your original using "isoproducer" did it make an .ISO ?
thats wrong (iso is a filesystem representation, but psx discs do not honor the filesystem, but use something own)
you need to make an .img or a .bin with .cue like cdrwin (the real classic for psx)

I always used clonecd back in the day to make my backups, will do so again when the patch comes around.

Something to do with PSX discs being in CDXA format iirc.
