Another question, sorry if it's been already said, did you put your names in the credits?
Artemio wrote:That has already been answered as well. Sounding like a broken record "The site and project will go on, we just need to find the people to help with that".
Ah, I'm so sorry! Well, what about the second question? "And is there anything you can take from your work with the Playstation version that you can bring to any other version?" I guess not then.
Artemio wrote:Well. I already met him, and all I could do at the time, instead of asking all those questions I had in mind, was to say "Ohayou Gozaimasu" with bad accent; since I knew no Japanese back then.
Good Morning? I'm studying Japanese. I went to Japan last year, and often there were times that I couldn't say what I wanted to say... I so know what you mean! But, meeting Kojima, of course, tops my story!
Marc wrote:I met him and Yoji in December 2004 at a Snake Eater signing in Tokyo when I lived in Japan, but the project was in development hell at the time, so I didn't mention it.
Do you know if he is aware of it now?

That was answered a couple of times as well. Yes there is some stuff that can be used, mainly knowledge though. A ton of work must be done again or re-crafted for that purpose.

It is just as you describe but with more structure. First you need to identify how the data is stored, for instance, how is the Japanese text encoded within the game. Usually that implies, as in this case, figuring out the character table.

Then you need to figure out how that is processed and used within the game, code programs to manipulate it as you suppose it should work, and replacing it. that implies manipulating data chunks, pointers, encoding and decoding of data, etc. As you can see lots of trial and error and assumptions.

Thanks a lot for that reply.. though there are things unanswered one more.. why won't just manipulating the character arrays/pointers won't work? what else has to be done?

As for "The site and project will go on, we just need to find the people to help with that" goes...
You can count me in for future projects, provided i am needed somewhere.

What do you mean? Who said manipulating those won't work? But I guess that it is very clear that *just* altering/manipulating pointers isn't enough, the rest of the things described (and more) need doing anyway. Just compile some source code in ansi C and then try modifying the executable directly to get a better idea.

I don't mind going into detail about this.

But it sounds like you mean code modification, right? Something like making:

char *sentence = char[256];
into
char *sentence = char[512];

Keep in mind, we have absolutely no access to the Policenauts source code whatsoever. We have to deal with already compiled code when we have to do code-hacks. We still deal with it when we try to figure out what all the data means.

I don't mind answering questions about how Policenauts stores its text pointers, or even what we mean by text pointers, depending on exactly what we're talking about.

I just didn't get the fact that the mere changing char arrays/ char pointers won' work alone and you have to change more code than just those. Of course we have to change the arrays size, but as far as string encoding (japanese) in assembly..i have no clue. Also you mentioned writing code to manipulate these char arrays/pointers. This is due to the fact of the encoding??? Also, what is the hex editor in use?? Thanks guys..

Because there is graphics to translate and because the game is compiled to handle those specific pointers. We write code because doing it by hand on an hex editor would be near to impossible. So we simply write code that does the process.

Influenza. Next up is Cimex lectularius, or the common bed bug.

Looks like the "quit" one actually

You know the character caption introductions in Metal Gear Solid? That's what they call a telop in Japan.

4, 3, 2, 1, Beta....... then public beta? or do we get the finished
version after your beta is done and further fixed?

You don't intend to have people do beta's for it on the psp version
do you? Because people use different firmwares, psp's, and different
eboot.pbp writers. So people get different results on games working
and not working....

Yeah. I mean, I've WANTED to play this game since I imported it for Saturn in what, 99? I remember it was right after I beat Metal Gear Solid for the 40th time and wanted to play whatever game the mech anime cut scenes came from in Otacon's bs reasoning for his name. Yeah, I didn't get much further than the prologue before I realized that, even if i beat this game, I wouldn't know what the shit was going on. Anyways, nearly ten years later, this will be a reality. Pretty much my most anticipated rom hack ever. I know I've wanted to play this way more and for way longer than I wanted to play Mother 3...maybe Seiken Densetsu 3 but that was a LONNNNNG time ago. Shining Force III scenario 2 and 3 are pretty good games being translated right now but that project seems to really get bogged down a lot. Besides, none of those top my anticipation for Policenauts.

yar, that's what I feel, as childish as it may looks

I haven't "touched" a videogame since MGS4 last year, this generation is absolute rubbish (with the only exception, other than MGS4, of Lost Odyssey) so I'm as excited about this patch as it gets, right now.

I'd definately donate. My stupid posts aside, this is actually what I feel like. The best part is though for the first time in years....IT'S NOT A METAL GEAR.

Plus as an added bonus, it's Kojima's early work aka his best work.
