Policenauts PC-9821 emulation guide

Post by MrSeed »

Hello everybody,

Here is my first version of the Policenauts PC-9821 guide. It's not completed yet (version 0.01) but it should be good enough to play the game on the emulator Anex86 or T98-Next.

Any comments, suggestions etc are highly appreciated as I already said: It's just version 0.01.

Thanks, it did help me to run T98 next properly.

Though the problem with no CD sound remains. And no lip sync with T98 next either. But the PCM sound isn't as bad as some people say. Sometimes it'll lag a little bit but that happens very rarely.

Hello, I have a problem with Policenauts on PC98, I use Anex86, and I configured it like you said.
I have put the content of the folder "CD" on a CD-RW, so I have a CD with "PNauts.bin" and "PNauts.cue" inside.

The CD drive on my computer is "D:", so I configured the panel "CDX" of Anex86 to "D".

I have "User (Anex).fdi" on FDD1 and "Policenauts.hdi" on HDD1.

But when I click "Start", I obtain this message : Image

Apparently, the emulator doesn't recognize the CD, what can I do ?

Help me please...

You need different ASPI drivers for the PC88. Try searching on google, I'll try an find some for yo tonight.

Just a bit of advice. When I installed the ASPI drivers, it still didn't work. I used a program to delete all of my ASPI drivers off of my system, and then I re-installed the latest version again. BOTH times I restarted my computer, but only the second time worked. So if it doesn't work the first time, even after restarting, then just try again.

I never heard of "ASPI" before (I usually use a Mac, so I don't really know a lot about the configuration of a PC...)

What should I search ? An ASPI driver supporting Anex86 ? Is that it ?

You need MSCDEX properly configured for the PC88.

You should boot in DOS mode for Policenauts to work. You need to run the setup disc and follow the instructions, unfortunately I don't have them available here (I am connected via the Cellphone). Then it will create a boot floppy, and you use that boot floppy to reboot the machine and run Policenauts. Your machine should already have mscdex installed and working if not then you need to setup that first.

EDIT: I just reread your posts and see your are using a pre.generated image, so sorry about the confusion I generated.. my bad. You should re-try the steps again or use T-98 to check if that works for you.

I have just tried with T-98, but I have the same problem...

First, to install the software, at the step

Code: Select all

- Extract SCSI4CDN.NHW (Windows 2000/XP) or SCSI4CD.NHW (Windows 9x) from SCSI4CD.ZIP to the DEVICE directory of T98-Next.
the file "SCSI4CDN.NHW" can't be recognized by T98, so I tried with the other one, "SCSI4CD.NHW" and T98 recognize it.

At the steps

Code: Select all

- Select the line '*SCSI4CD(N).NHW'
- Click on the right button at the bottom and select the CD drive which contains the Policenauts CD.
I have a window asking me a number, but my CD drive is a letter, "D:", so I tried with 5, and it doesn't work, I tried other numbers, from 0 up to 8, but it doesn't work...

So, what's the problem ? Is it the "SCSI4CDN.NHW" file not recognized ? Or my CD ? (I have the two files "PNauts.bin" and "PNauts.cue", and the CD name is "Policenauts")

i do not know the emulator used, and i never tried pc98 emulation,

but burning a bin/cue-files combo as files onto a CD sounds just wrong to me, as these two files represent a cd-image already

I'm having a problem... The intro has no music. I tried both Anex and T98 emulators... Also, the intro looked pretty bad on Anex, and ok in T98.

EDIT: Oh, looks like Alcohol virtual drive doesn't support analog audio... I tried some other virtual drives, and they either don't support analog, or don't support cue files. Can anyone recommend me a good program?

I tried that program and it didn't work for me... I don't remember what happened, thought. But it might be the reason the emulator is freezing.

I FINALLY got the freaking CD audio to work. I "just" had to use some old Daemon Tools (the newer ones don't have analog audio), change something in the boot.ini to present my Windows from crashing using the program, extract the audio tracks as wav files, add two seconds to the end of each file (except track 3), unite tracks 3 and 4, and edit the cue file to mount the CD using the wav files as audio tracks. Oh, and I couldn't get Anex to work, I have to use T98.

So simple.

Personally, I think a video telling how to configure this and stuff would be nice. That's just my opinion, as I'm more of a visual person.

That's a good idea.

BTW, I downloaded the opening and end themes onto a CD, and I play them at their appropriate places: The former on the "Konami Presents" screen, and the latter during the shot

the iso mount doesn't use your actual cd drive.
mount the cd and check what virtual drive letter
it uses under my computer.
