Mobile Phone version's name changes and their canonity.

Post by Johnny Undaunted »

Excluding different romanization of the same names, here are some of the name changes made to the characters' names in the Mobile Phone versions of Metal Gear 1 & 2 according to the following site (http://www.zakugiri.com/) and Konami's official website.

MSX - Mobile Phone

Shoot Gunner - Shotmaker
Arnold - Bloody Brad
Natasha Marcova - Gustava Heffner
Yozev Norden - Johan Jacobsen
Petrovich Madnar - Drago Petrovich Madnar

Any other name changes aside from that? I imagine they would've renamed some of the more ridiculous-sounding names such as Black Color or Ultra Box (or at least come up with better "don't sue us" spelling for them).

I heard that the MGS3: The Countdown book uses the names from the updated versions in their "History of Metal Gear" section and list Elen's full name as "Elen Madnar" instead of "Elen Petrovich" like in the original MSX manual (which is actually more consistent with how Dr. Petrovich was named in the later games). Any scans?

I wonder if the Mobile Phone versions will overwrite the old versions or will they revert back to the originals for every subsequent references to the older games?

I don't see much of a difference, in quality. The new names sound just as bad, only not as funny, which kinda takes something away from the game.

Now that's weird. They used the new names for the bosses, but decided to stick with Natasha Markova's old name in the book.

"Black Ninja" sounds way too generic. Four Horsemen is definitely an improvement over "Ultra Box." I imagine Night Sight's new name is romanized "Night Fright" (cause Night Flight would sound stupid). I'm surprised Predator isn't listed. Is he even in the Mobile Phone version?

What about the MG1 characters? Do they get full names like Schneider did in MG2?

I always thought "Cyborg Ninja" sounded pretty generic, too.

Yeah, but at least none of the characters ever called him by that name. They simply called him "the Ninja" prior to unveiling his identity.

I checked in a rush the book today, so only scanned that part before leaving for Japanese class at 6 am... I'll check tonight =P

Not to be a prick, but did you checked that part out yet? You don't have to scan anything. Just tell me if there's any difference.

On the contrary.. I am sorry I took long. But honest truth, I scanned it in the morning and had no time to post a reply here (I woke up late), and thought I'd upload if from the office. Thing is, I forgot to take the image with me =P

Thanks!

The resistance members still have single names, but at least I caught one name change that I didn't see before.

Coward Duck is now Dirty Duck. I noticed that the names that were changed were mainly references to pop-culture icons or previously-released fictional works (i.e: Howard, the Duck, Arnold Schwarzengegger, Ultravox, Blackcollar). I wonder if Predator got his name changed too.

So it seems that as far as canonical authenticity goes:
New Bosses' names > Old Bosses' names
Gustava Hefner < Natasha Marcova
Elen Madnar > Elen Petrovich
Yozef Norden was apparently not important enough to be listed.
Neither was Predator.

Neither, Petrovich and Schneider are listed by their proper full names as far as their recent appearances, but that doesn't neccesarily make their full names non-canon. The name Petrovich in particular, is more commonly used as a patronymic middle name than a given first name (or last name, as was Elen's case in the MSX MG1).

So that's why all the bosses names were like that, it was a pop culture reference thing... (I like "The Four Horsemen" actually...)

I'm considering trading up from my regular MGS3, but I hear my regular save might not work (someone said MGS2:SOL's saves weren't compatible with MGS2:S.)

That's true. Save files from the original MGS2 are not compatible with Substance (although, you can use a save file from Document and unlock all characters in Missions mode). Likewise for Integral. I imagine it will be the same thing for Subsistance.

I still think some of the new names could be better. For example, Fire Trooper's name could be changed to something like Firestarter, while Black Color/Ninja needs a name that reflects his occupation as a space ninja. Something like Starkiller.

Are there any other name changes to the MG1 characters, other than those already listed in this thread?
(if they're in that scan, i can't read katakana either)

I'm working on an update to the retranslation patch for the game and want to include the new names in one, if feasible.

To my knowledge, it's only those three bosses (Shotmaker, Dirty Duck and Bloody Brad).

Fire Trooper and Machinegun Kid (along with Big Boss naturally) are the only bosses to keep their original names (in other words, pretty much everyone who had a trading card in MGA).

Everyone else is the same, at least according to the The Countdown book and the walkthrough in Konami Online's website.

To be honest, I'm not too crazy about another translation with name changes. How about an updated Metal Gear 2 translation? I've noticed that there's a few missing lines and translation errors here and there.

I've thought about that. Although, I have other things in the works at the moment and it's not my project. I'd have to consult Takamichi-san first.

No problem. It's just that after playing the game raw, the errors in the translation becomes quite bothersome to me. I know that in the game itself, the following stuff are missing from the fan-translation:

Campbell explains the reason why Snake can't use the radar in Alert Phase is because the enemies are using Minovsky Particles to jam the signal.

Fox mentions that he had his ears and nose cut off as a REMONA soldier. BTW, the term REMONA is an error of the game itself. It should be RENAMO.

When Natasha mentions Frank, she calls him Frank Hunter, not Frank Jaeger. Later, while fighting Gray Fox, Kessler mentions Fox's real name (Frank Jaeger) and the fact that the name Jaeger is German for Hunter.

Also, I notice the following things in the manual:

Not an error per se, but I think a more proper translation of Black Color's former unit is "Extraterrestrial Enviroment Special Forces."

The university Red Blaster attended, I believe is supposed to be the Lumumba University, as in Patrice Lumumba (now called The People's Friendship University of Russia).

Predator's former unit I believe is supposed to be the South African Reconnaissance Commandos, which are nicknamed Recces.
