VR Missions: Meaningful?

Post by Skycladiana »

While I've played all three MGS games so far, I've yet to have been even able to find the VR Missions that are talked about so much in Sons of Liberty. I'm wondering whether or not those 300+ missions have anything that could help to grasp a better understanding of the themes and aesthetics of the series as a whole.

Do the VR Missions have a story, or are they just plotless action? How involved was Kojima in their making? Should I take them about as seriously as Acid, which is not at all?

You mean the add-on pack for the first Metal Gear Solid? Well, the ones alluded to in MGS2 aren't neccesarily the ones you play in MGS:VR - in fact they're nothing to do with them, I don't think - and they don't have any story at all, and aren't essential in understanding the games in the series. They're quite fun, though, and certainly worth playing, especially the 'Mystery' ones, which are wonderful.

They don't have a story, but they're cool as hell.

And every Kojima whore wants to finish them.

I recommend, but get ready to hate, you can be really pissed off by some VR, specially from Substance.

The numbers and category names of the missions Raiden mentions when talking to Plissken are the same as the ones in the VR disc. It's a fourth-wall allusion to the player being like Raiden, etc.

Can I get all if them by just buying Substance, or am I gonna have to get the original PS1 edition as well?

You'll need to buy MGS: VR Missions or MGS: Integral (Japanese import but the text and voice are in English) for the MGS1 VR missions. The content of the VR discs is basically the same, except the Japanese version allows you to save replays of some missions and watch them in a replay theater.

Do the VR Missions have a story, or are they just plotless action?

The VR missions are traning missions that pratice the characters in combat and other things the same goes for MGS2 Substance and MGS Special Missions(MGS intergal) and by the way MGS Intergal is completely in english?

They don't have a story, it's just practice for the game.

Integral is entirely in English, except for the staff comments on the Codec, those are Japanese only (but they're not a big part of the game). Integral is pretty nice, I like the arrange mode you get when you finish the game where the guard placement is different. It's much harder!

Well, what's the easiest one to find in good quality, for the lowest price?

I'm on a budget!

No, Integral will be quite expensive, I paid $50 USD on mine.
Substance I paid $55 USD.
I believe that VR missions/Special Missions will be like $15 USD max.
It has the same missions as Integral.

Not much. It's two discs, the second disc has both vr missions and the latter half of the game. The visuals are very nice, seeing as how it's not being run on PSone hardware, Edges are smoother but the poly count is the same.

So in essence Raiden is akin to a virtual representation of the actual player in MGS2? (Or, dare I say -- a pawn?? Yeah, I went there. :P)
