Thoughts on a MG coffee table book?

Post by Szczepaniak »

What is everyone's views on an almanac style coffee table book on the Metal Gear series?

Since you guys are as serious as Kojima fans get, what would you need to find in it to be satisfied? How obsessive and obscure should the coverage be? Encyclopaedic in nature?

How much cross-over would be people be interested in? Lengthy examination of the Ape Escape 3 Mesal Gear Solid minigames? Examinations of titles like Snatcher and Policenauts, which had cross-over fan service material? Detailed reviews of the books Kojima based his work on?

What would his biggest fans, such as yourselves, want to be reading/seeing?

I think it's a great idea. I'd buy it and put it on the coffee table I don't have. In fact, I might buy (or build, I've got carpentry skills) a coffee table just so I could put this book on it.

As for stuff I'd like to see in the book, it'd be cool to have some kind of crazy in-depth interview with Hideo Kojima on anything and everything in there. It'd be neat to have some Snatcher and Policenauts stuff in there.

What would be really awesome is if there was a section devoted to coverage on really obscure Metal Gear merchandise.

I always had the idea of doing one myself. Or at the very least doing an encyclopedic-like (non-Wiki) website with key terms and character descriptions from the canonical games.

If you need a contributing writer, I'll be an assistant and write the bios. Are you doing this unofficially or are you trying to get Kojima Pro's official seal of endorsement?

I pitched the idea to the publisher, who liked the idea, and currently they're the people trying to get official approval. I should know "soon-ish". It all rests on this, and would obviously improve things no end.

There's no guarantee of anything yet, which is why I was nervous of starting such a public topic. Being a freelance writer, I know not to get my hopes up.

But I'm glad an expert such as yourself is interested in such a thing. :)

Worry not, I'll keep you updated.

I too would like to donate time to the project if needed.

Also, if the book does end up getting made and every thing, I could plug it on the video podcast some friends and I started if we're still around by then (hopefully we will be).
