What does everybody think of light-gun games? Just a thought

Post by Junker_05 »

I was walking past an arcade after I'd caught a flick (X-Men III) and all these people were flocking to TimeZone (don't know if anybody overseas has it, but it's an arcade) to play games. Incidentally, I was one of those people!

The first thing I make a beeline for is the shooting games in an arcade, and I reckon they're good as a novelty thing from time-to-time. (I also own all three Time Crisis "novelties") Since we're all gamers here at Junker HQ, I was wondering what everybody elses opinion is on them.

Amazing, i was just thinking about them last night while i was searching ebay for a good light gun for the Xblock. No matter how bad the games are, they're still fun to play. It's one of the reasons i'm looking forward to the Wii. This also reminds me, while i do have Silent Scope Complete, i didn't play much of it, but there were a few references in to to metal gear and some other konami games. i'll play it again whenever i get my hands on good light gun.

Awesome! I've been lately if the PS3's going to get any light gun games... I reckon it'd be awesome to run something like LE3 on. Come to think of it, it could probably run on a PS2, but still, it'd be awesome if they'd release LE3 on a PS3.

I'm still annoyed they never released the fantastic Jurassic Park: The Lost World arcade game for home consoles. That was my favorite game to play at the arcades (next to Crisis Zone).

Yeah man, I'd have to agree with you there! Jurrasic Park was an awesome game! So was Crisis Zone, but only in the arcades, in my opinion. There's just this emptiness you feel when emulating a machine gun with a G-Con2, and when I play on my small T.V in my room, the whole screen fills with gunsmoke and you can't see much. Probably better, once again, to go to an arcade and play it or for me to buy a bigger T.V. ^^

As for Time Crisis 3, that was just the biggest letdown.. I reckon they should give the Time Crisis series a rest, then bring it back when they think of some new gameplay ideas, 'cause they're not flogging a dead horse: The horse is decomposed, and they're playing the xylophone on the ribcage.

I think Light Gun games only really work in the Arcade. I have had a lot of fun at home with the G-Con 45/Steering Wheel Pedal combination on Time Crisis, though.

Theer have been some very good home games that use the gun... I used to play Die Hard on the PSX with a guncon compatible gun, that had feedback and some more gimmicks... tons of fun.

I'm a big fan of light gun games. I just don't own any current-gen ones.

Now that you mention current gen.. I just recalled why I haven't played any for a while.

On CRT TV sets that are neither NTSC or PAL native and in Plasma, LCD, Projection and DLP you cannot use the light guns. I have been tempted to buy one of these:

LCD TopGun
Sharp Shooter 2 Arcade Light Gun

Since it allows playing on these sets, though it only supports current gen systems. A shame my CRT is 100mhz.. I cannot any of the guns...the Guncon, Saturn gun and Justifier.

Maybe you should invest in buying one of them, then. If you're willing to get back into the genre, that is.

Edit 1:
Ooh, that Sharp Shooter 2's an ugly son of a bitch, isn't it?

Edit 2:
And why does the LCD TopGun come with a hair straightener?

Just view the rest of the images for your response. It is quite obvious how the achieve this backwards compatibility, there would be no other way to do it ...

I just played The House Of The Dead 4 this past weekend (I thought that series was dead with 3) and I rather enjoyed it. It definately had some cool features, such as shaking the the gun back and forth to break free from a zombie's grasp.

The only thing I don't like about light gun games is that my arm hurts after playing for about 20 minutes or so, but other than that I love them.

A bit outdated for my liking.

I have played only few times. First time was the game "Die Hard trilogy" for PSone, and there was lightgun mode, it was bit good actually, but still i don't like that kind of games so much. I've also played some games in arcade, but i didn't find those games so enjoyable... :???:

First one I played was Lethal Enforcers for the Megadrive (Genesis). Thought it was amazing at the time. It's awful, but hillarious, now.

Has anyone ever played Silent Scope on Xbox with the special rifle? I never really got it to work well on my TV, but it's a pretty decent idea nonetheless.

Even when my TV's brightness was up all the way it still didn't want to work. On some TVs it worked perfectly, though.

It is pretty funny, isn't it? By the way, does anyone know if the SNES Justifiers are rare?

EDIT: I'm thinking of selling my SNES ones... I'll post pictures. How much d'you think I'd get off of people from eBay? I'm trying to get money for the PS3 coming out this year, and I might sell these.

EDIT2: I apologise for the horrible quality of that 2 Player Justifier box... I've misplaced my digital camera somewhere in the house and the closest thing I've got to one is a camera phone with bluetooth ^_^.

Believe it or not, that was actually easier to find than the Player 1 SNES Justifier (the blue one). Snagged it pretty cheap, too. Including the postage, it cost me about $55 Australian. Fucking bargain, considering the box is in pretty good nick, as is the gun itself.

I loved Virtua Cop 2. My good friend Brandon and myself use to play it for hours using the Stunner on our Sega Saturn. For the time it was very interactive since nearly everything on the screen was shootable with at least some reaction and you could choose different paths at certain points in the game. You could also target to shoot the weapon out of the enemies hand without actually killing them which was known as a "justice shot". We'd attempt to play through the entire game doing just that or "triple shots" (hitting the enemy quickly three times in succession). It provided a good bit of replay value.
