I need help!! (english translation of saturn)

Post by straydog1980 »

I used to have Snatcher for my sega cd, but like a fool i sold them both years ago. I can't justify dropping close to $150 to buy the game and the system...

I purchased the sega saturn version just so I could see the game again because I loved it so much. I can't enjoy it though because it is completely in Japanese!! Is there anywhere to find a translation or does anyone else have ANY suggesstions so I can really enjoy this fantastic game again???

Browsing these forums and the site depressed me because I want to enjoy it again so badly.... please help if you can at all :(
"will somebody please translate the saturn version of snatcher to english already??"

You're out, buddy. If you really want an English version of Snatcher, the only version of Snatcher that's free is the English MSX version (http://www.caetano.eng.br/snatcher/)- lucky for you it happens to be an English version. There are sites that offer ISO/MP3 downloads of the Sega CD version, but I'm not at liberty to list them here.

And really, if you do some poking around the site, you don't want the Saturn version anyway. It's arguably the worst version of Snatcher behind the PSX version. Ugly graphics, heavy use of bad looking CGI, inferior music, heavy censorship...

There are a couple of problems with translating the later versions of Snatcher.

First, the game already has a great translation in the Sega CD version. I can understand why people would want to play the earlier versions (especially the PC-Engine version) in English, but I don't see why anyone would want to play the Saturn version given the choice (but I know you don't have a choice, at least you may think you don't). It's inferior in every way, and the dialogue and text is almost entirely the same, except for a few new bits here and there (like the Gibson candy subplot).

Second, the dialogue would remain in Japanese, and since there would be no way of adding subtitles to the dialogue scenes, this would hurt the experience, especially for newcomers.

Those are the main issues, but another problem with doing a retranslation like that is the Sega CD one is so well done, it just wouldn't feel right. Speaking for myself, my motivation wouldn't be as high considering there's a great translation already out there, and since I've played it quite a bit, a lot of the translation would end up the same, not just because of that kind of subconscious influence, but because I would find it hard to improve upon most of the text anyway.

My advice is to get a hold of the Sega CD version one way or another, and play it on Gens if you don't want to buy back the console.
