MGS main theme stolen?

Post by Finalfantasy7 »

Over at TUS a poster found a piece of music that sounds very similar to the main theme of MGS, check it out.

Winter Road by Georgy Sviridov(link, why is the links color so similar to text color?)
It's frighteningly similar, yet there are noticeable differences.

I'm surprised the MGS fanbase has yet to find this. And it's bit fishy that this was never offically mentioned by anyone.

Maybe Tappy "borrowed" from it?

That's very interesting. While it's not close enough IMO to justify calling it a complete rip off by any means I'd have a hard time believing it didn't at least provide a large amount of "inspiration".

The thing with creating similar music is that it could be something subconscious. After hearing so much music throughout your life I'm sure just about anything you create is going to be influenced by something you've already heard even if you don't recognize it at the time. If any one of us right here as we sit attempted to hum a "unique" tune to ourselves I'm pretty sure you could find another song that had a nearly identical beat to it.

That's just my thoughts on the matter but maybe I'm thinking too much.

A lot of early MG stuff trancends referencing, and becomes plagarism (MG2's plot, MG1's cover art, Snake, etc.) and the theme was likely recorded before KCEJ knew it would be such a hit, so they didn't think anyone would care.

Actually, it's even on the Wikipedia entry for Georgy Sviridov. I'm surprised the MGS fanbase has yet to find this.

That was added after the connection was discovered recently. Just check the history.
