Fellow fans, what non-Kojima games have you loved?

A forum to talk about stuff that doesn't fit in other categories, such as general Kojima games discussion, other games, etc.

Fellow fans, what non-Kojima games have you loved?

Post by Szczepaniak »

Ok, this topic is to get an idea of what non-Kojima games you have played and loved.

Mainly, since we must all have similar tastes, chances are there are other games we all mutally like. It might be a good way of expanding our gameplaying experiences, since I'd certainly be interested in taking a look at any other games mentioned by people.

It doesn't have to be the same genre as Kojima's games, just games you have liked.
Who knows, perhaps we discover a common psychological trait in all of us, or a trend for liking certain games.

List up to about 5-10 games, but please actualy give a few sentences of why you like them, so that it doesnt turn into just an arbitrary list. Can be old games, or new games.
(obscure stuff that no one has ever heard of is very welcome!)

Star Control 2 (PC/3DO):
I wont try and descirbe this too much, its better simply to experience it. But this is the only game that can generate the same strength of emotional response in me as Kojima games. The gameplay may be totally different (free form space adventuring), but on a purely emotional level it matches it, wether its the humour, fear or sadness found within. (its open source now, so I recomend you check out the free download, and get the voice acting too!)

Goemon series:
One of Konami's greatest franchises, I say easily on the same level as MG games in terms of how much I enjoyed them, though for totally different reasons. Funny, bright and filled with a strong sense of fun. Some of my greatest SFC memories are thanks to this series.

Skygunner (PS2):
Amazing art direction that resembles an old French style of comic book drawing rather than anime, yet at the same time the game world has a Hayo Miyazaki feel to it. Take to the skies and battle flying piano airships in a magical fiction world. Notable for me since the character AI is some of the best I have experienced on the PS2, both the enemies and your allies feel alive with unique traits depending on whats happening. The multiple charatcer design dynamic is also deeply satisfying, adding much length to the game and allowing you to see things from different angles. Sorely overlooked by the gaming masses.

Popful Mail (SCD):
Sublime side scrolling adventure game backed by suitably excellent voice acting and cinemas. Heavily anime influenced. The multiple character switching and overall level design really shine out, making this my joint favourite SCD game alongside Snatcher. Every Sega CD owner owes it to themselves to play this.

Exile (Amiga):
Recently got into this, and I really like it. Vagually similar to Super Metroid on the SFC, except you can fly anywhere at all times thanks to a jetpack, and the whole game is filled with strange natural life forms that you must deal with (both flora and fauna can help and hindre you). Despite some overly complex keyboard controls (there are at least 14 seperate buttons that need to be used, making it difficult to map to a pad), and the difficulty of emulating the Amiga, the end result is well worth it.
Oh, and did I mention that the main gameplay mechanic involves using quick saving and loading to aid you? Your jetpack can log up to 4 different positions, allowing you to save a location and load back there when in a jam. The majority of puzzles rely on this, and it works far better than it sounds, some of the puzzle is ingenius.

So fellow Kojima fans, what non-Kojima games do you enjoy?

Frontier: Elite II
Right up there in my favourite games ever, another space adventure I guess, mainly involves trading, dogfighting and running errands for either the Imperial Empire or Federation. Such a simple format, a massively complex program I should think, and the whole galaxy is mapped for your exploration. Love this game.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Best side-scrolling platform RPG ever? Perhaps. Such elegant graphics and a multitude of items and weapons to get, massively replayable game that I absolutely adore, and Alucard is such a cool cat, despite having dreadful voice acting and not much story.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skateboarding 2
When I first played this after having played the first game, and being a skateboarder at the time, the physics blew me away. Just the right balance or realism and fun turned into wonderful gameplay. Great level design, music and interesting goals and targets, a real triumph for a sports sim.

Rez
A game where everytime you play it, the experience is different - be it because you shoot down the enemies in a different order, your form is different, resulting in different visuals and audio, or you take a different route. What games should be like. A multi-sensory experience that changes every time.

Mega Man x2
This has got to be my all time favorite game. The graphics back in '96 blew me away, with the use of the C4 chip. The levels and bosses are both original and quite challenging (not for me anymore, but still very enjoyable) And about the soundtrack, man do I love this soundtrack. It has to be one of, if not THE greatest soundtrack ever. Every song has gotten stuck in my head at least 5 times  It's a shame there was never a port to PSX that could have used anime cutscenes like X3 did (I have the japanese and american SNES/SFC releases of X2, both I hold dearly)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Ah, the good 'ol SNES days. I used to play this game from 9am to 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays every week. I suffered through many hardships though, the cart I was using was in very poor shape, and if moved slightly it would reset the game. When booted, if the intro Triforce thing did not show, that meant all my saves had been erased  This game still has a feeling of mystical powers to me, I would search for every secret possible until my SNES was red hot. The only help I had playing it was from some guys that would hang out at my babysitters house (I was about 4-5 at the time) and give me little hints at where to find the flute

Biohazard
A very big fan of Zombies ate my Neighbors, and at the age of 5 my father would feed zombie movies to me (DAwn of the dead, Day of the dead, Night and Return of the living dead, and sometimes even The Beyond!) I remember seeing this for sale at a local pawn shop, and thinking to myself "THIS GAME IS AWESOME!". I told my dad that it was a 3D version of Zombies ate my Neighbors, and he immediatly bought it. I was both happy and scared for years to come.

Clock Tower 2 (1 in the US)
After about 2 years of playing and loving Biohazard, I was introduced to the Clock Tower series. Man oh man was I obssesed with this game. I would go without breakfast just to escape from the Library in Helen's scenario 2 hahaha. The deaths were move styled, which I very much enjoyed, being a big movie fan.

Return of Billy the Kid (IBM)
This game was given to me as a birthday present when our family had our '88 IBM setup in the dining room. After I installed it, I began playing. THe gameplay on this thing is just as good today as it was 10-11 years ago. The Sheriff level would scare the living crap out of me, I wasn't used to being chased and shot at

Well, since James already took Rez and Symphony of the night:

Ico PS2
A game taht a lot of people have hated, some have not appreciated and some have liked. It is a game of ambience.. slow paced and contemplative, with reach environments that make you feel real and surreal at the same time. In the spirit of Prince of persia gameplay, a real masterpiece.

Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo TurboDuo
A great game with greta music.. using cinematic techniques when the bosses enter, in a sprite based form and without going to a cinema per se when not needed. The gameplay, stages and music are pre Symphony of the night, but crearly in the same direction in all senses. Truly a great game.

Blade Runner PC
This game, although it might look a bit dated now, was a great thing to play since I am fan of the movie. The game has several endings, and the plot does change depending on what you do during the game. The ambient of the movie is perfectly recreated and several details from the books are reunited with the movie elements to create a deeper universe. This is easily one of the best licesing efforts from a movie to a game. Music, voice acting, environment, ideas and plot are top notch.

Lunar the Silver Star/Luner Eternal Blue (Sega CD/Sega Saturn/Playstation)
A great couple of games that truly are gems at the story level... introduced me to cinematic like games, and also have funny translations by Working designes (some people hate them.. I grew playing them, so I can't complain and love them). The music is great too, and the emotional notes it touches I simply love. Maybe too innocent or "white" for some people, but they simply some of fondest games.

Monkey Island Series PC
Ingenious games, Lucasarts at it's best. These adventure series is very funny, wacky and graphicaly delicious (didn't like the 3d that much, but hey...). I woudl have loved to see the creator go on with the series, but the games we got instead are good enough and the sprite art is impressive. Not in a serious note, but great to play and enjoy in it's detail.

Rayearth (Sega Saturn)
Quite a piece of work here. It was translated by Working Designs, and took them quite some time. Humour, cute graphics, great characters, video and diaries to read. Also a bunch of extras and solid game play, a must see.
From the mathematical perspective, consciousness might be regarded as a second derivative of sensation.

Broken Sword Series
I remember watching the trailer for the first when i was pretty young and not thinking much of it, but then when i played the demo, it was something else. I think it got me hooked because it reminded me of Monkey Island, and then from here, it was just amazing. It has great voice acting, beautifully animated scenes, a great storyline and some great one liners. Something for everyone and i highly recomend.

Resident Evil Series
My brother got this of his friend when we had only had the playstation a few months, and i think it is still possibly the greatest game on PSX. I loved zombie films since a very young age, so playing a game where you got to take on zombies and a whole lot more, it was just cool. Plus, the characters were cool, and for the time, the graphics also good. Plus, those brilliant one liners, "You were almost a Jill sandwich" ect. I love every game in the series, even Gaiden and Survivor, but nothing can take away from the first on PSX, not even the remake.

Shadow Of Memories
I bought this game thinking it looked like Shenmue for the PS2. I was wrong, very wrong. It was nothing like Shenmue, but it was something far better. You play Eike, and upon starting the game, the main character is killed, and givin a chance to go back and stop this from happening. What follows is a great time-traveling game which has 6 very different endings, some great puzzles and some great twists in the story. Deffinitly one of the best PS2 games, and one of the best Konami games ever. I recommend to everyone. In some places i believe it is called Shadow Of Destiny, and you can get it for around 7 pounds or $15, so go now and pick it up.

Half-Life 2
The best PC game i have ever played ever! I had been looking forward to this game for awhile but to finally play it was like something i had never seen in a game before. The graphics were stunning, the story gripping, the gameplay excellent, changing moods constantly, and the new driving sections kept it fresh and exciting. Even on my low end Laptop, whihc didnt allow the game to run at full pace, and with Lag at times, i was blown away by this. if you havnt played this go and get it now, if you dont have a good enough PC, go and get one worthy and get it, it is that good. I could go on for hpurs about this but it still wouldnt sum up the expiernce felt while playing this game.

Silent Hill Series
I remember playing this on the demo with MGS, and compared to Resident Evil which never really scared me, only made me jump at bits, this scared the hell out of me. I think it was using the devil, i am not religous and havnt ever been, but it was still effective. The first was a great game, as was the second, the thirs was dissapointing to me. It seemed rushed and is deffinitly the weakest point in the series dispite people saying that the 4th is. But the fourth, which got the worst reviews, and is said to be the worst by most fans of the series is in my opinion the best. I don't exactally know why, but i loved everything about the 4th, and to top of the great story, graphics and new gameplay, the 4th had the greatest soundtrack, whihc is thanks to Akira Yamaoka.

Monkey Island Series
The game i was raised on by my brother. I was made play and like this on the Amiga, and i thank my brother for doing this. Monkey Island is the greatest comedy game ever. Guybrush Threepwood, the wanna be pirate was my idol at around age 6-8, and he still is one of the greatest heros to now of any game. The game was genius, a great soundtrack, beautiful animation for the 80's  and was generally just supurb. The second was also great, as were the third and fourth. The fourth was deffinitly something i didn't think could be pulled off, the leap from 2d to 3d was something many games had tried and failed with, but this was pulled of nicely.

Other games i love and think are worth saying are...
Syphon Filter Series
Dino Crisis 2
Evil Dead Games
Chase The Express
Parasite Eve 2
Final Fantasy VII
Goldeneye
Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time
Shenmue
Another World
Flashback
Max Payne
Manhunt
Timesplitters 2
Jet Set Radio Future
Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis
Sam And Max Hit The Road
Day Of The Tentacle

Im sure there are more, but i cant be bothered to go on any more, and i cant think of any more[/i]

I agree 100%. I still own that game and play it from time to time. For a Sega Saturn game, it looks phenomenal.

Other favorites include:

Tales Of Symphonia ~ Nintendo GameCube
Great storyline, lovable characters, wonderful soundtrack and one the best fighting systems I've ever seen in an RPG. One thing I never like about RPGs is the classic FF "turn-style" fighting systems that most of them use. Not TOS... this fighting system rocks. I've put in nearly 100 hours of playing time into this game according to the game's stat system... that's how good it is.

Sonic Adventure ~ SEGA Dreamcast
I've always been a SONIC nut, so this was a given that I'd get a DC and this game eventually. It has it's share of flaws, but when it first came out, I was floored by everything it had to offer... including a great soundtrack. And it's Director's Cut on the GameCube made it that much better.

RBI Baseball ~ Nintendo Entertainment System
My brother and I used to play this endlessly when we were little and it just has a lot of good memories involved.

Super Mario Bros. 2 ~ Nintendo Entertainment System
Completely different from all the other SMB games in every way, I just absolutely loved this game. And the SMB All Stars SNES game made it even better and more enjoyable.

Keio Flying Squadron ~ SEGA CD / Keio Flying Squadron 2 ~ SEGA Saturn
Two classic games that not too many people know about. The SEGA CD game made a U.S. (limited) release and for those who played it, most of them loved it. A classic side-shooter game with lots of character and humor.

The sequel never got a U.S. release but was dubbed in English and released in Europe. A very, VERY rare game that I'm very happy to own. This one was more of a side scroller game, but did have a few shooter levels ala it's prequel. Incredible graphics and a wonderful anime style make this very enjoyable.

Super Mario Kart [All versions/sequels] ~ Multiple Systems
Who doesn't love the Mario Kart games? Very few games have made me curse out loud at my friends while playing this. If I get hit by the "Lightning Shell" one more time... :x

Super Mario World ~ Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The first SNES game I owned that I got one year for Xmas. I spent three solid days of my Xmas vacation from school playing this until I finally beat it. Just typing about it makes me want to get my SNES out from the closet and start playing it again. Great game.

StarFox ~ Super Nintendo Entertainment System
A game that blew me away when it first came out. For it's time, those were amazing graphics and there are times I still wonder how the SNES pulled it off.

Bubsy : Paws Encounters of The Furred Kind ~ Super Nintendo Entertainment System
I really don't know what made me love this game so much. Bubsy was just a great character that I can't believe he hasn't lasted like SONIC and MARIO did.

Fire Pro Wrestling : 6-Men Scramble ~ SEGA Saturn
I'm a fan of pro-wrestling, and this is still probably my favorite wrestling game of all time. The amount of moves you could perform and how well each move was animated still astounds me to this day. And it had just enough American (WWE/WCW) wrestlers in it, too.

The Legend Of Zelda : A Link To The Past ~ Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Probably the only Zelda game I've really ever been able to get into (let alone beat), but everything about this game clicked to near perfection. Just a flat-out all time classic.

Street Fighter III : Third Strike ~ SEGA Dreamcast
In my opinion, the best pure fighting game, EVER. The animation of the characters is phenomenal. And what a great soundtrack.

Shenmue I & II ~ SEGA Dreamcast / X-Box
This game has it's fair share of nay-sayers, but I still love this game for the way it just sucks you into the storyline. Lan Di will fall at my hands one day...

Resident Evil 4 ~ Nintendo GameCube
I bought this game about a month or so ago, and I've hardly been able to take it out of my GameCube (and one of the sole reasons I haven't been working on my site lately). A total revolution to the RE series, and a very welcome one at that. If you haven't gotten this game yet... GET IT.

That's enough for now. I really should add this (plus a few other favorites) to my site one day.

Well, I'll keep this short and sweet.

Suikoden series: Ok, so the 4th one wasn't that great, but the other 3 are. The games are full of tragedy, betrayal, love, all the good elements.

Lunar series: Snatcher said it best

Dark Wizard: Another Sega-CD gem, and a game that I've sunk a sad hour into.

I'm a little brain-dead at the moment, but I'll think of some more.

I could write quite a lot here, but I'll try to keep it brief.
Resident Evil 4
Only played this at the start of the month, aand I won't be getting it until March (UK Release), but it's already one of my favourite games of all time and has completely restored my faith in Shinji Mikami, as well as removing any cynicism I had about him. Everything is done superbly well, anything that annoyed me about previous Resident Evil games have been removed, or replaced by some incredibly good ideas. The game shines with quality through and through.
Donkey Kong
A classic, and it's the game that essentially made both Nintendo and Miyamoto who they are today. Superbly designed game, and a prime example of thinking outside the box. I'd actually say it's underrated, myself.
Metroid series
Such smooth and enjoyable games to play, and everything flows through the experience. Has redefined itself with Prime and still has not been anything but improved. A set of masterpieces that pushes technological and creative limits.
Tomb Raider II
A very clever game, and a fantastic followup to a game that defined the PlayStation generation. Fantastic level design, puzzles and enemies throughout. Couldn't find a moment I didn't enjoy, even when I was most stuck.
Grand Theft auto: San Andreas
Not a clever or original choice by a long shot, but you have to appreciate what has been done here. Pushes the PlayStation 2 amazingly far and succeeds. Essentially a huge playground with thousands of possibilities. Hard to play without having fun.
Ico
In a sense of gameplay, this is far from one of the most important games I have played, but the game is taken with such care, you actually manage to ignore that. A trully stunning game, and certainly one of the most atmospheric I will ever play. Depressingly overlooked. Every game designer needs to complete this game.
Flashback
A wonderful showcase of design and storytelling. One of the first plots I was genuinely interested in hearing. Looks wonderful, and plays just as beautifully. Some very memorable scenes and areas make for an unforgettable game. (Quite reminiscant of Snatcher, too)
Sonic the Hedgehog Series
The pinnacle of level design, in my opinion. The game didn't play very deeply or celverly compared to Mario, but the stunning multi-course levels are what made the series. A joy to play.
Gitaroo Man
The pinnacle of Bemani, for me. Great humor and design, matched by a very clever control method. Great music throughout, and generally tonnes of fun. Master's Play mode is nigh-on-impossible, but one of the best things I've ever played.
The Legend of Zelda series
A series treated with a lot of care and intelligence. Full of surprises. Reinvents itself constantly, and never seems to fail (let's not mention the CDi, okay?). Completely defines adventure gaming. Filled with memorable characters and music. Unforgettable.

Probably missed out a helluva lot of important games there. Probably should've listed these, too-
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Super Mario World
Half-Life
Doom
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Wario Ware series
Megaman
Pokémon Red and Blue
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series
PaRappa the Rapper/Um Jammer Lammy series
Shenmue
Other members of the Resident Evil series

Capcom Fighters
Before MGS came out I was so fanatical for Street Fighter 2. To me it's like the Star Wars of arcade gaming where it brought people in droves back to the acades. Between '91-'95 I can relate some story of teenage mischief topped off with a trip to the arcade late at nite. I'm really enjoying the hell out of Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and once in a while i'll whip out the Sega Saturn and play Zero 2.

Phantasy Star
First RPG I ever played was Phantasy Star 2 on the Genesis. After that I had to get the converter so I could play Phantasy Star 1. To this day Phantasy Star 1 & 2 are the only RPGs that i've played multiple times. I'm currently waiting for the often delayed Phantasy Star collection on PS2.

Herzog Zwei
A very obscure Genesis game. For those people that know what i'm talking about it was one of the most perfect head to head games out. It's a strategy game where you control a jet that transforms into a robot. You have to create units, from infantry to tanks to take over bases and attack your opponent. Small units like infantry can be created quickly with tanks, SAMs and boats taking more time to create. So you had to balance your time to create a stable attack/defence. At the time of its release theres been no other game like it. Actually I can't think of a game that is like that today. The game had a large variety of maps like a futuristic city, volcanos, forests & glaciers. Another thing that was great about the game was the music. It's one of those soundtracks that you turn on your console just to listen to it.

Ninja Gaiden(NES)
First game I saw that had cinema cutscenes which in todays games are commonplace. Very good gameplay and a pleasure just to watch it in motion. I have a speed run of Ninja Gaiden on tape from the late '80's and I like to watch it for the speed and beauty of pace of the game.

Revenge of Shinobi
It was the 3rd Genesis game I got and probably one I played the most. Great control. Even greater is Yuzo Koshiro's music. Yuzo Koshiro was the first video game music rockstar for me. I bought games like Streets of Rage and Actraiser just so I can hear his music. Another thing cool about Revenge of Shinobi is that with a few tricks you can turn it into the japanese version of Super Shinobi.

Yie Ar Kung Fu
First fighting game I played with a great variety of opponents. It also had a good combo system. This game seems to be the precursor to future fighting games.

Turbo Outrun
I think the alure of this game was the fact that it moved like a carnival ride. This is the first game I remember saving all my lunch money just to play it. I remember saving about $70 worth of lunch money and blowing most of it on Turbo Outrun.

Double Dragon
This is one of those big games everyone knew about. One of the best 2 player co-op experiences I ever had. This is the first game I could go thru on one credit.

Golgo 13(NES)
Based on the manga/anime chara. This game had a great variety of play modes. They had a side scrolling adventure. 1st person shooting and 3D dungeon areas. Even though Phantasy Star had the 3D dungeons first, this was the first game that I experienced it. This is also the first game where you gain your health back by going to a hotel with a lovely lady. I think her name was Cherry Grace. It was a very adult game at the time for the NES.

Pro Wrestling(NES)
First pro wrestling game for the NES. It had a good amount of move along with top rope manuevers and diving attacks to the outside. Alot of the characters were modeled after real life pro wrestlers like Antonio Inoki for Fighter Hayabusa and Mil Mascaras for Starman.

Rush N Attack
Great side scroller where you were a green beret with a knife and you acquired various weapons like a pistol, grenades and rocket launcher to Rush in and attack the Russians. The last stage you had to make your way thru this 2 story base and blow up a nuclear missile with a rocket launcher. Those jump kicking soldiers were really annoying.

Ah, yes... how could I forget about Zero 2 (known as Alpha 2 in my region of the world). The first SEGA Saturn game I owned and put countless hours into.

A game that blew me away when it first came out. For it's time, those were amazing graphics and there are times I still wonder how the SNES pulled it off.
Actually on my drive home from work last week I was pondering that very same thing. How did the SNES pull it off?

FX chip, developed by Argonaut, a British company. Same thing was modified and helped make Yohsi's Island the visual feast that it was. You seriously haven't heard of the FX chip? It was legendary, did all the complex mathematical equations for handling polygons.

Some great games mentioned, some I have been meaning to get hold of (Keio Flying squadron has been on my buy list for years now), Plus several other games I am even more determined to get hold.

I am noticing a trend, especially for some of Konamis finest. I second all mentions for Castlevania SOTN/Rondo no chii, as well as the Suikoden games. (I didnt like no. 3, but 1 and 2 were painfully good)

Thinking about this, Id say that of all my games that I own, the biggest % goes to Konami.

Konami was unbeatable in their SNES days...

Batman Returns
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Castlevania 4
Contra III
Castlevania Dracula X
Lethal Enforcers
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in time

The list goes on and on

I know about the FX chip. I was just posing that as a rhetorical question but thanks for the refresher. I just find it amazing what the human mind can dream up.

Oh, man, I love threads like this. I get all these good recommendations and then I want to go out and buy the things I haven't heard of. My wallet hates you all.

I have a few to contribute as well. I'm skipping the ones that have already been mentioned, since other posters have done them justice.

Starsky and Hutch (PS2): Here's a game that I think was sone a great disservice by the reviewing community. In single player, this game is right terrible, but it was designed to be played multiplayer. One play is Starsky and drives the car, the other player plays Hutch and gets to hang out the window with a revolver. Most of the missions involve finding a particular car and shooting and ramming the living snot out of it. The best part, and the thing that makes this game awesome, is that it supports both the Logitech force feedback steering wheels and the Guncon series (both 1 and 2) of light guns. Hutch gets to shoot with an actual gun controller, and Starsky has to line up good shots for him. To this day it's my favorite teamwork game, and just about every Best Buy I've seen is selling it for $10 US. These features only work on the PS2 version, so avoid the others. But the PS2 one is something special, and used light guns can be found for as low as $10 if you know where to look. Definitely recommended if you have the hardware and usually play games with a friend or two.

Sorry about the length of that.

Xenogears (PSX): Considered by many the greatest RPG on the PS1 (even over FF7), Xenogears has been my favorite RPG, period. The mature story, endearing art direction, and unsurpassed depth of story have secured this game as the only game other than Snatcher which I will admit to being a rabid fanboy about. Realize that I say this with all of my love for this game, but I do believe that I have never seen a better fictional story in any medium. Xenosaga ep. II comes out next week in a language I can read, and I am giddy with anticipation :)

Guilty Gear (PS2/XB/ARC): I've played quite a bit of the fighting genre, ever since I got my butt kicked at Street Fighter 2 when it first hit arcades, and summarily declared it the best videogame experience I had had up to that point. Ah, youth =) Heavily anime influenced and very Japanese, the Guilty Gear games (particularly the new XX #reload one) are the most well-balanced intricate of the 2D genre. Simple enough that a new player can jump in and play it without too much trouble, but with a depth of strategy that even the world champions are still refining. Special mention goes to Virtua fighter for complexity and Tekken for making fantastic crunch noises when you hit people.

These reviews are getting a bit long, so I'll make the remaining ones shorter.

Robot Alchemic Drive (PS2): Giant robots! Smashy smashy! Shoulder buttons control legs, analog sticks control arms.

Full Throttle (PC): *motorcycle vrooming noises with lips*

Music Games: AUGH ITS SO HARD BUT I KEEP PLAYING IT

Every Guncon Game Ever Made (mostly PS):God I love lightgun games.

That Game Where You Roll Crap Up Into A Giant Ball and It Makes You Laugh Like An Idiot (PS2): Oh yeah, Katamari Damacy.

Keep 'em coming!

Let's see, games that I've truly loved are very few and far between but...

Earthbound (SNES):
Just extremely well planned madness. The game that got me into RPGs and showed me that games really could make statements about things outside themselves. Like the MGS series, it seems like a game that thought of everything, and I like that.

Sam and Max: Hit the Road (PC):
The "great leap" game for humorous adventure games. Grim Fandango would refine it and take it to the top of the charts, but Sam and Max always holds a place in my heart. A funny game that didn't talk down to anyone (except for Conroy Bumpus, for obvious reasons) and didn't hesitate to make fun of itself. I found the sequel getting canned to be truly depressing.

Baseball Stars/Tecmo Super Bowl (NES):
These are really the foundations of sports games today. Baseball Stars had the RPG player improvement which easily made up for the lack of a license. Tecmo Super Bowl just played so much better than anything until Madden came to SNES.

Final Fantasy VII (PS):
The reason I got a Playstation. I've played better RPGs, but something about this game kept me playing. I never realized games could be this big in scope before this.

Crusader: No Remorse/No Regret (PC):
It's games like these that spawn sites like Home of the Underdogs. I just bought a copy of No Remorse in the box that I can't even play on my current computer and I couldn't be happier. Neat graphics, interesting point of view and a storyline that gives just enough. The level design in these two games are something I've always enjoyed.

Elevator Action (Arcade):
The best gameplay designs are the most simple. Elevator action is what arcade games are all about. I bought the board a while back, but the monitor on my cabinet is busted and I haven't been able to fix it. *sigh* Someday I will conquer this sucker in its arcade glory.

With the exception of Elevator Action, I've finished all the above games. I've got a bad habit of starting games and not finishing them, so when a game brings me all the way to the end, it's usually pretty special.

Honorable Mention (finished):
Beyond Good and Evil (PS2)
Floigan Brothers (DC)
Sly Cooper (PS2)
Katamari Damacy (PS2)

Honorable Mention (As yet unfinished):
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Rez (DC)
Grim Fandango (PC)
Battletoads (NES)
Skies of Arcadia (DC and GC)

I've played Metal Gear so much in my lifetime, it barely even feels like I've played anything else.

Never thought too much of Fear Effect. I bought it after PlayStation Plus (a UK magazine) gave it 10/10. I found it was a fairly limited game, due to the graphical style, most of the game was trial and error, and even action scenes seemed scripted.
Got to the Hell section of the game and gave up, as I wasn't getting anything from playing it. I'll be selling my copy and the small artbook (came free with PlayStation Plus) on eBay, soon.

As i expected for around this time, an update to my own list in the shape of....
Resident Evil 4
Well, i could have not added this game as i have already mentioned the Resi series, but that would be very wrong, it needs to be commented on its own. After many years of waiting for the true sequel (Zero was not a proper sequal, it dosent fit in well with the others, and C:V was pretty boring and long) I finally got it Friday passed and have not been able to leave my room for longer than an hour since. Its so good. Better than most other action games on the market. Its one of the few games i have played in awhile that made the experince fun. Some games i buy and play through, either to see the ending, or just so i can say "Ha, i have completed that" but with this i generally had so much fun. Mikami was a genius to kick the formula in the teeth and remake everything we know about Survival Horror. I dont know what to say about it really, it just leaves me with a huge grin when i leave it. Its just so good.

I like Shenmue because it's so mundane it's fun.

Splinter Cell, I liked how it expanded on the stealth games a bit, and deserves to be said in the same breath as the MGS games. A very original multiplayer mode makes it the most refreshing multiplayer ever.

FF7, The RPG that made RPG's mainstream, it introduced me to RPG's and was fun as heck back in the day.

X-Wing/TIE Fighter, I was once a Star Wars fanboy, and I loved these games to death. Even though the game just had goraud shaded polygons it was very immersive. It made the star fighter of the movies more 'tangable'
