Any other Cyberpunk games anyone like?

A forum to talk about stuff that doesn't fit in other categories, such as general Kojima games discussion, other games, etc.

Any other Cyberpunk games anyone like?

Post by hybridtheory »

I liked Deus Ex a lot. It had a lot of freedom, and pretty much drew inspiration from Gibson, Phillip K. Dick, and newer visions of the fture namely Ghost in the Shell. The main theme is what stick to my head. Too bad Ion Storm is dead, and I didn't think the sequel was as bad as people said it was.

FF7 is Steampunk.

Wiki'd
Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. It concerns works set in the past, or a world resembling the past, in which modern technological paradigms occurred earlier in history, but were accomplished via the science already present in that time period. It is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase but developed as a separate movement.

Works of this genre typically also fall into the categories of either science fiction or fantasy.

There are a lot of reasons:

- Space Exploration in its infancy.
- Old stlye veichles
- Old fashion towns but big hight tech mega city.

You could also put FFVI into it also with victorian settings and comtemporery fantasy settings.

System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, man.

EDIT: System Shock 2 is the godfather of games like Deus Ex. You go and play them both, and they're very similar in gameplay, the inventory set-out and the ability to customize yourself using augmentation - I think you can get it for free at The-Underdogs.org. If anyone wants a link to that, by the way, just PM me. Peace.

Yeah, the Shocks and Deus Ex are great games.

There's a spiritual sequel to Shock called Bio Shock in development. I guess you'd call that steampunk as well.

Yeah, I hate trying to get old games to work with modern systems. I've decided to buy a desktop PC98 so I can play Policenauts properly, and trying to get the right soundboard and DOS (Japanese) version is going to be a pain. It would be ridiculously easy if I was still living in Japan (30 minute subway ride to Akihabara). It's not so much that it's hard to gather the gear, it just feels so awkward having to do it from halfway around the world (through Rinkya to boot), and you have shipping costs, too.

It's now my understanding that collecting Kojima games and buying the equipment to play them is a very costly hobby.

That computer would be just for playing that game.

But the actual stuff isn't very expensive. I once saw the model I needed for around $20, but I couldn't stay with the auction til the end and someone had outbid me.

Have you seen the prices for every copy of Snatcher on eBay? 50-100 British Pounds at the least, which over here's about $120-$400.

One hell of a bump, but one that's worthwhile.

You might want to try Beneath A Steel Sky, it's a classic cyberpunk title. Plus it's freeware.

According to Wikipedia, Charles Cecil had another interview on August 10th of this year. He basically commended ScummVM and pretty much continued to state his interest in a sequel. So yeah, who knows what's going on. I just hope it isn't facing cancellation.

I'm just glad I had time to edit; forgetting the word 'sequel' was a bit of an oversight. I really hope that does happen, a sequel like that has such potential. The first one's excellent but so short, though incredibly entertaining while it lasts. The ending's always bothered me, though - he heads back home but wasn't his home blown to bits at the start?

Yeah, the ending to BASS kind of confused me. Like you said, where's he going to go if his home has been destroyed? My guess is that he went out on some lone survival mission, like that retired judge official in Judge Dredd. Takes a shotgun with him, along with some food and goes out to explore The Gap.

Heh, also didn't help that his spiritual home shared its name with a popular American clothing outlet.

Another interesting cyberpunk game is Rise of the Dragon for Sega CD. If I remember right, you have an actual time limit you need to finish the game under.

rise of the Dragon... It was also very interesting for it's setting.. and the story did change depending on your actions a lot. It had tons of little details too, very nice game indeed.
